Cycling Notes.

By Pedal-pin.

_ Training is going on steadily. The lazy riders should remember that a race, be it ever so short, cannot be run without some training. The holidays this week are inducing a good many 'cyclists to go off touring. Two are already away South, others go North on Thursday.

The Volunteer aports on Saturday include two bicycle events, for which seven or eight entries have been received. The distances are one mile and five miles, both handicaps, for amateurs only, and the prizes are trophies. Good contests should result.

A Ride to Clutlia.

I started from Dunedin on a Tuesday morning a short time back to pay a visit to some friends in the Clutha district. Of course I rode my steel steed. Left town at 6.15 a.m. j a stiff south-wester made the first 15 miles anything but pleasant. Stopped (for breakfast 8.30, started again at 9.30. Roads good till Taieri Bridge, which was in, bad .order. -In riding over the bridge got a spill. Mounted at end of bridge and made fair time over the road to Milton. Stopped for dinner" at the Commercial Hotel (recommended). At Ip.m. started again. The wind made the next eight miles rather warm'work. Stopped at Lovell's Flat for two hours. Over the next eight miles slow progress was made, owing to the hills. Balclutha was passed through at 5.30 a.m. • then the Port Molyneux road was taken. Waitepeka hill was the scene of another spill. The road was covered with loose , boulders, and being steep I could not pull up in time to dismount in a more graceful manner than I did. Pushing on again I reached my destination (63 miles) at 7.30, having been 13 hours on tho road, and nine in the saddle. The return journey was made a few days later, but was broken by a stoppage for the night at Lovell's Flat, coming on to town next day in 5i hours.
