Wool.— We a-'e now in receipt of telegrams down to close of the first series of London auctions. The following is the message from our London office, dated 31st March: — " The sales closedon the 31at instant' at an average advance of 5 per cent, on last sale's closing rates. The principal advance has been in superior greasy and superior combing washed. 18,000 bales have been held over for future disposal ; 165,000 bales have been taken for export. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 265,000 balea." Locally but little business has passed, and prices have not shown any quotable improvement. Grain.— Wheat : There is no change to report. Consignments of prime milling can be placed readily at 4s 6d to 4s 7d, but millers evince no disposition to lay in stock sat present prices. Medium descriptions are not much inquired for ; but fowl feed is scarce, and commands a ready Bile. We quote : Prime milling, 4s 6d to 4s 7d; medium, 3s 9d to 4s 4d; fowl feed and inferior, 2s 6d to 3s 6d. Oats : Quotations show a further advance, and there is no difficulty in disposing thereat of all parcels coming to hand. We quote : Prime milling, 3s to 3s Id ; bright feed, 28 lid to 3s per bushel. Barley: Nothing to report. We have inquiries for good samples of malting barley. •We report lar <r e auction sales by this Company at Waimate on 3rd l mat., at which wheat Bold at from 4s 2d to 4s sd ; old oats, 3s Id to 3s 2d ; and barley up to 4s 4d. Fat Cattle.— There was a plentiful supply, 201 head being penned. Of this number about one-fourth was of good quality, and for these the demand was biisk, last weel?s quotations being fully sustained. The balance consisted of cattle little move than half fat, which the butchers manifested but little inclination to purchased, even at a reduction on last week's rates, We sold 92 head ai follows :— From Balmoral Farm

(West Taieri), 15 prime bullocks, at from £8 2s 6d to £11 ss ; from Birchwood 1 (Wyndham), 21 bullocks at from £6 7a Od to £8 12s 6d ; on account of Mr John Bruce, 10 bullocks at from' £5 159 to £6 ; on account of Mr James Wright (Langlea), 10 bullocks at from £5 5s to £6 2s 6d, and 9 cows at from £5 5s to £5 12s Gd ; and on account of Messrs James Howard, J. Fat Sheep.— There was a moderate supply, 2402 being penned; but the trade having heavy, stocks on hand, the demand was very slack, and' to effect sales a reduction of at least Is per head on last week s prices had to be submitted to. Pigs.— About 150 came forward. For grain-fed pork and bacon piga and well-grown stores 'the demand was good, but < suckei'3 wore, almost unsaleable. Weaoldl3i-as follows :— Bacon pigs, at from 29. j to 675; porkers, atfrom2ls to 255: stores, at from ,12* 6d to 23a ; and suckers, at from 5s to Bs. Stove Cattle. -The demand just now is very dull, We have, however,'- inquiries for quiet well-grown bullocks suitable for turnip fattening' for delivery five or six weeks hence.' ' '

Store' Sheep continue in good -enquiry.:. At tht* Burnside yards, to-day, we, sold 800 crossbred ewes (most full-mouthed and in poor condition), at from 8s to 9s. Privately.during the week, we have sold 6500 sheep as follows :— 3OOO four and six-tooth" crossbred eweß, 2000 full-mouthed merino wethers, and 1500 fullmouthed merino ewes. At Palmeraton, to-morrow, we shall offer by auction 2000 good merino ewes Flock Rams,— We hove to report the sale on account of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company (Clydevale) of 107 Lincoln and Leicester rams ; and on 'account' of James Shand, Esq., 32 Leicester rams at satisfactory prices. Horses.— .There is a good demand for sound upstanding saddle and light-harness horses, also for first-class young , draughts. Inferior lots of both descriptions are quite a drug in the market. Fiftyfive 0! all sorts came forward for Saturday's sale, and < f these we sold 30 at fair rates. We quote first-class draughts at from £30 to £35 : medium, £20 to £25 ; food hacks and light-harness horses, at from £20 to £25 ; medium, £12 to £15 ; light and inferior, £3 to £6.

Sheepskins. — Our weekly sale was held last Monday as usual. There was a full attendance of buyers and good competition, prices obtained being somewhat in advance of last week's. Butchers' crossbreds sold at from 2s 'to 2s 9d, merinos at 2s, and lambskins at from lOd to 2j ; station skins at up to 4s lOd. ; Hides.— Values are unchanged. We hive sold' during the week 130 at recent rates. Tallow.— We did not offer any this ( week. 1 Grain.— Wheat continues firm, the demand for export still existing ; millers are, however,' indifferent about operating at the 'rates current. At quotation* during the week, we have placed 9400 bushels. We quote prime milling (Tuscan) at 4s 7d to 4s 8d ; prime redstraw and velvet, 4s 4d to 4s 6d ; ordinary, 4s Id' to 4s 3d ; inferior and fowls' wheat, 3s to 3s 6d. Oits are in very brisk inquiry for export, and any lots offering are readily placed at quotations, which are as follows ; Prime milling, 3s Id per bushel ; good feed,3s. Our sales for thewoek consist of- 36,800 bußhels at above rates. Barley: There ia none offering irf , this market ; we hear, however, of sales in the 1 Timaru district, at 4a 4d per' bushel for ordinary maltj ing. Fat Cattle.— 2ol head were yardod to-day atißurnside, and with the exception of' several peas being , prime, the remainder were of ordinary quality. There was a brisk demand for prime bullocks/but medium weights were in less demand. Prime bullocks broughc £7 15s to £11 128 6d ; ordinary, £3 17s 6d to £7 10s ; cews, from £3 10s to £7 10s. We sold 50 head on account of Messrs W. Jenkins, T. Geary, W. J. MAuley, Mcc Brothers, and others, at quotations. We quote extra prime beef 22s 6d per 1001b ; ordinary, 20s Fat Calves.— Twenty-two were yarded, and sold at from 6s 6d to 235. -1 ;• < , s 1a * Fat Sheep.— A fair supply of 2410 was penned to-day, consisting of -about 400 merinos, and the remainder crossbreds. The trade having partly sup- ' plied themselves from last week's full market the previous Wednesday's p.ices were hardly maintained, and a reduction had to be submitted to. Crossbreds brought from 12a to 17s ; merinos, 6s 9d to 11s 6d. We yarded 600, and sold them as follows :— On account of Mr George Crqsbie (Edendale), 36 crossbreda at 14s 3d, 1 ' and 49 , merinos at 6s 9d ; on account of Mr Sims , (Otepopo), 34 crossbreda at 13s 6d ;' on account of Mr ' James Gall; 268 merino ewes' and ■ wethers at 8s ; and on accounc of Mr O. Samson, 100 merinos at quotations. We quote prime mutton, 2Jd per lb. Fdt Lambs. — 350 were penned, and sold at from 8s .6d to 11s 9d. We'sold 183 at 88 6d to 9s 3d.

At Balclutha, on the 30th ult., we held our usual monthly sale, when thero .was a lair amount of stock forward, and sold as follows :- 500 crossbred ewes, 8s lid to 10s 3d; 200 merino do, 4s to 5s 6d ; 100 merino wethers, 10s 6d to lls 9d ; 30 lambs, 7s 7d ; store bullocks, £4 5s to £5 103. ,We shall sell at, Mr Duke's farm, Stirling, tomorrow (Thursday, GMi), draught mares and geldings, ■dairy cows, fat and store cattle, implements, &c. ; and at Mr John Henderson's Mark Hill Farm, Warepa, on Friday, the 7th inst., 1000 mixed sheep, 50 head .cattle, hordes, and implements; and at Mr John Milne's Riverbank Farm, Greytown, on Tuesday, 11th inst., 20 colts and fillies (two to three years old), five draught mares, £)0 head fat cattle ' and 100 head store cattle, implements', and sundries. Wool. -Tho following is the latest cablegram from the Home market, dated London; April Ist, announcing the closing- <of the sales : -" Tho wool sales closed ,with good spirit and without further quotable change in prices. The total quantity sold during the series was' 26o,ooo bde9, and 190,000 bales having been held over for the next sales.

Sheepskins.— We submitted a fair catalogue at our sale on Monday last, and disposed of several lota at prices similar to last week. Crossbreds up to 4s, 7d ; merinos, 4s ; butchers' pelts, Is to 2s ,8d ; lambskins, 2s 7d ;' skins in bales, 6{jd to B§d per lb. Hides.— We have placed all lots on hand at 4d per lb for sound wet salted. Fat Cattle.— Again a large supply came forward, 201 being yarded. With the exception of a few pens prime, tho bulk were middling quality and light weights. The sales opened quiet and remained so throughout. Bullocks sold at £5 2a 6d to £11 2s Od ; cows, £3 10s to £8 15s, or equal to 20s per lOOlbs for beßt beef. Wo yarded 35 head, and sold on accounc of John Sutherland, Esq., East Taieri, 13 head up to £7 ; on account of W. T. Shand, Esq , Qtakia, 11 Cuws, at £4 to £6 7s Gd ; and for William Lindsay, Esq., Greytown, 7 bullocks at £f> 17a Cd to £6 10s. • Fat Calves.— Twenty-two yarded. Of the»e we sold for T. W. Shand, Esq., 11 very prime quality at 29a l|o 70s each, according to size. Fat Lambs.— The total yarded to-day was 3602, included in the-<e were 1200 stores, mostly in low condition.
