On Monday last Messrs Haxton and Beattie took their departure from Gore with the object of commencing the manufacture of the " patent flexible harrows "in your town. Prior to their departure they were entertained by a number of their friends at a social meeting in Sullivan's Hotel, on which occasion the usual round of toasts was indulged in, chief amongst which was that of " Our guests."

The Gore Town Board has elected as its chairman Mr Thos. Green, who, from his intimate knowledge of the routine work in connection with such bodies, should prove a worthy occupant. Mr Campbell, of Invercargill, is the successful tenderer for the erection of a house for the Gore stationmaster. The amount is £340, which includes fencing-in of section, formation and gravelling of approaches, &c. The opening of the shooting season has been unattended with any wonderful results in this district, wild fowl being very scarce. The unexpected, and to our farmers very welcome advance in the price of oats, has created an earnest desire to invest in this cereal. Farmers, however, are very cautious, and hold back for still further advances. Yesterday I heard that 2a 8d per bushelfor a large parcel of the new crop was offered by a dealer, and refused. Harvesting operations are all but concluded. A few late fields are still in stook. The average yield will be a fair one, much better than was anticipated some months back. Some of the lately-arrived Canterbury farmers are leading the way by preparing the land to receive a winter-sown crop of wheat. Hitherto the main crop of wheat has generally been sown in the spring,
