WAIKOUAITI COUNTY RACES.

The above racing club held their second annual race-meeting on the Waikouaiti Becroa-tion-ground on the 23rd. The weather during the forenoon was favourable, but shortly after 3 o'clock a cold wind, accompanied by a heavy shower, camo on, and slightly marred the pleasure of the visitors. Taking all things into consideration, the meeting must be regarded as a very successful one, f or the attendance was large and most of the races well contested. The arrangements were very satisfactory, and • in this respect the committee and the secretaiy (Mr Gill) are to be congratulated. Of course there was the usual contingent of " little-game" men, who, in common with the general public, seemed to be duly impressed with the consequences that would follow an infringement of the Gaming and Lotteries Act j consequently nothing in the shape of " sweeps " took place. Appended are details of the racing : — HURDLE RACE. £12 10 a, with a sweep of 10s each for all horses accepting. Over eight flights of hurdleß. Distance,, two miles. Mr B. Duncan's b % Foresail, 4 yrs, 9st 81b „. 6> This was a capital race, especially betweero Olinkerima and Modesty. The former, however, pulled away at the finish, and won by a> couple of lengths. All the horses faced the flag, and after a slight delay they were sent away well together, Bells* being the favourite. Out of £47 in the totalisator, a dividend of ' £1 16s was declared. The Selling Race was won by Mr Temple- • ton's Noah after a closely-contested race. The Hack Race also fell to the lot of Noah, . but a protest was entered against him on tho ■ ground that he was a trained horse. The amounts in the totalisator in those races •' were £28 and £51 respectively.
