KELSO TOPICS.

; (FROM OUR' OWtf CotfßEßp'olh)BNT.) '" '

• ,' ', ' ', March 6th. j During 'the last,' few weeks things have been very) quidt. A few' of ' the 'farmers have commenced harvesting, and I understand the crops are looking fine, ' ihrough6ut the district., It is <to be hoped, that good, weather .will set in, so that the crops, may be got safely in. ,, ■ , . . , ' f A conceri to raise funds for tho School to enable them to put up a' fence round the school »buildings,'>took"<place-here< on 'Friday- evenings -Mr Butchart occupied the chair, and explained to the audience tho object of tho concert. It would take tooj much space to give.a de Jailed account of tho way each one performed his part. 4 Suffice it to say that thi concert was a great success, about 250 persons being present, so that the Committee will clear about £21! Mr James M 1 Donald, champion piper, was present, and played a few aelectionsiinrris usual able style. He appeared in a costume recently sent out from Home, and wifh a new set of pipes, the total cost of the whole being about £100., Mr Cummock, our local comic singer, kept the audience) in roars of laughter during ' the time he was on the stage. , He is a first-class dancer and a good comic singer. Master John Shaw, who is quite a boy, sang two songs in first-class style. With a little training, he will make a fine singer. It certainly says a great deal for the people in the district for turning ,out so well. A dance followed the concert, when about 30 couples appeared on the floor! The music was supplied by Messrs Buff, Bundle, and Cunningham. The busy season will soon be on again, and thero is no signs, of our telephone being put into the postoffice. I think it is high time we had communication with the telegraph-office ,at Tapaniii, as all telegrams have to be taken to Tapanui, and if a reply is wanted one has to remain there' till it comes. I trust those who look after these matters will see that the telephone is put into the post-office here. It will save a lot of trouble, besides" boiHg a great boon to the district. ' ' • i Our new school is cow. finished, and all we want now is a good teacher ; and lam afraid wo shall experience some difficulty in this respect. Our Committee are very particular about choosing a teacher. He who will please them must be a man with a very pure character. Still I think they have lost a very good teacher through being a little too particular. It is a sure foot that never stumbles, however. I notice that the Board is advertising for a teacher again, so that we may expect to eec the school opened before long.
