CHESS NOTES.

Another grand International tournament la to commence on the 30th of May next, at Vienna. The competitors must enter their names by the 2nd of May next. The entrance fee is lOOfr. Each player must play two games with every other competitor Drawn games counting half. There will be six prizes, and of the valuo respectively of 5000fr, 2000fr, lOOOfr, 300fr, and 200fr. Play will take place daily, with the exception of Sundays and holidays ; and the time limit will be 16 moves per hour. Tin's will give the masters another opportunity of testing their strength. London.— On December sth, the Key. G. A. MacDonnell conducted 20 games at once at the City Chess Club with the splendid result of winning 16, losing 3, and drawing 1, The first round in the monster tourney at this Club is now finished ; and the well-kno .vn playera Messrs Blackburne, Maczuski, and the Kov. G. A, MacPonnell have beaten their opponents. Oxford.— A match between the City and University Chess Clubs was played on December 2nd, with 13 playera a side, the students winning by 14 games to Birmingham.— A match between the local Ohesa Club and the Oxford University Chess Club took place on November 30th, the local club winning with the fine score of 14 games to 3, and 2 draws.
