KAITANGATA
(FBOM OUE OWN CORBESPONCIENT.) March Ist. , That important event, the Dunedin races, is now numbered amongst the things that were, and I daresay there are many who are sorry that it ever came, or that they were so foolish as to think that "that scrubber could win," and' who now bewail the infatuation that induced them to risk good money on so improbable a contingency. I see by the papers that there was a large crowd present, but I don't think that Kaitangata swelled the throng much, for very few of our residents attended, and my opinion is that we didn't miss much. ■ The beautifully fine weather of the past week has ' had a surprising effect in ripening the crops, and our farmers are. busy getting their grain cut. Should the present fine weather only last a few days more, haryest will soon be g meral. . There is a little excitement just now in our usually quiet little township concerning a rumour which is being circulated to the effect that our Athcnicum Committee had found some difficulty in getting the Matau Road Board to transfer some old road-line which is part of the site on which the Athenaeum btands ; but of course it is only a rumour. However, I shall very .likely be able to give allj,he particulars next week. Till then, vale.
