TUAPLKA WEST.

(FROM OUR OWN OOKBEBPONDENT.) February 28th.

Before this sees the light, harvesting operatious will be in full swing. The splendid ripening weather which we have had tbia past few days has greatly assisted in bringing the grain to a state of maturity fit for the reaper. There is a most excellent crop of wheat tbis year throughout the whole district. It h fully up to expectations, not a particle of rust having occurred in any part. The wheat of this district is fully equal to the best grown in any other part of the country, and as a rule brings the highest market value. The yield is expected to be very good, but we must patiently wait until the thresher does its work before we can accurately ascertain the yield per acre, A few months ago the settlers had a deal of talk over the rabbit nest, and it was decided to wait until after harvest before beginning bunny's destruction. Since that time the rabbits have multiplied tenfold, and it is to be hoped that vigorous and determined measures will be taken when a start is made. The cottage manse for the use of Mr Taylor (Presbyterian missionary) is being proceeded with as rapidly as possible by the contractor, Mr Walker. The contract price exceeds the amount voted by the Church Extension Committee by fully £50 ; but I feel quite sure, as this is a rich diatrict, such a small debt will quickly be wiped off An examination of our public school took place a few days ago, previous to its being dismissed for the harvest holidays. The examiners were. Mr Neill (teacher), Blue Spur, and Mr Taylor (missionary). The examiners expressed themselves very much pleased at the marked general proficiency which the several classes showed, and that the work was very creditable to the teachera and scholars. The School Committee did not give any prizes this year, which was rather a disappointment to the scholars, but a few special prizes were presented by several friends. Mr Taylor presented the prizes, with a few encouraging remarks to the successful competitors. Three cheers were given for lihe examiners and Mr Closs (teacher). It was then intimated that the school would be closed for four weeks holidays. , , , . Monday, 6th March, has been appointed for the election of a School Committee by the Education Beard. We hope to see a full muster of residents on that occasion, and a. lively interest taken in the proceedings.
