OTAGO BIBLE SOCIETY.

The sixteenth annual meeting of the Otago Bible Society was held in the Hall of the V.M.C.A. Rooms, Moray place, on Monday evening. The President (Mr W. D. Stewart) occupied the chair, and there were with him on the platform the Revs. Dr Roseby, Mesars White, Mackie, Niven (secretary), Michie, and Captain Scott, R.N. About 50 ladies and gentlemen -were present. The Chairman said he had received apologies for non-attendance from the Revs. Dr Stuart and C. J. Byng, and Mr Gordon ForW. It would have been gratifying to have had a larger attendance, but still it was sufficient to> indicate a certain measure of interest in th& work of the Society. It was gratifying to see that the sale 1 of the Authorised Version had increased, notwithstanding the publication of tho Revised Version of the New Testament, which, he thought, had brought about a greater interest in both than had previously existed. He then referred to the influences for good exercised by the Bible on society and on the world. The future of the Otago Bible Society— which was yet in its infancy— he looked upon aa a great and a glorious one. He concluded by calling upon the secretary (Rev. MrMven)to read the report and balance-sheet for the p&at year. ANNUAL BEPORT. The report stated that the object for which the Otago Bible Society was institutedhadbeen kept | steadily in view— namely, the sale and gratuitous distribution of the Word of God, together with the collection of subscriptions in aid of the work carried on by the British and Foreign Society and the National Bible Society. The business of the Society had been carried on during the year with a fair measure of success. At the Bible Depot were to be found copies of the Scriptures in 17 languages. The amount received from contributions was somewhat less than that of last year, being £167 12s Bd, but this might partly be explained by the fact that the treasury accounts had been closed this year at an earlier date. The total receipts for th© year had amounted to £403 2s. 8466 copies of the Scriptures had been sold during the year, 741 of whioh had been disposed of by the colporteurs. But in order to give a fair idea of what had actually been done, they had also sold 3558 copies of the revised edition of theJEnglish New Testament— thus making a total of 7024 copies of the Word of God, in whole or in part, that had been sent abroad. Reference was made to the British and Foreign Bible Society, and to the great success of tha work they had undertaken. The value of the ' work done for the Otago Bible Society by their colporteurs (Messrs M'Donald and Cowper) could not be over-estimated, as they had visited the country between Dunedin and Queenstown, and had alao held a number of meetings in various up-country districts. _ The thanks of the Society were due to those friends who had rendered valuable aid by devoting time in collecting the necessary funds. The. credit balance at the bank was £310 5s lOd. The Rev. Lindsay Maokie moved— "That the report now read be adopted and printed, for circulation; and that the thanks of tha meeting be tendered to the office-bearers, and especially to the collectors, for their labour during the past year ; also that thesurn of £60 be remitted as a free contribution to the British and Foreign Bible Society, and £60 to the National Bible Society." The motion was seconded by Captain Soott, and carried unanimously. The Rev. Dr Roseby. moved—" That in view of the responsibility resting with the Church of Christ to hold forth the Word of Life, and while lamenting that so largea portion of thi3 world's population is yet in spiritual darkness, this meeting thankfully rejoices in the measure of success that has attended the efforts of the various Bible Societies to give the Bible in their own language to so many nationalities, and prays that the time may speedily coma when all men shall be able to read in their' own tongue the Word of God." The resolution was seconded by the Rev. J. White, and carried unanimously. OFFIOE-BEABEBS. The following gentlemen were appointed office-bearers and committee of management for the ensuing year : — President, Captain Scott, R.N. ; vice-president, Rev. Dr Roseby; secretary, Rev. J.
