Of his opening the Bulletin writes thus :— " We have had some experience of first nights of shows in Sydney, but certainly never have we seen an audience so demonstrative in their enthusiasm as that which welcomed Mr Maccabe. The secret of his extraordinary success is that everything he does he does not only well, but extraordinarily well. His ventriloquism is a most remarkable exhibition of the art. He throws his voice without any effort, and his face the while is immovable. In the ancient and modern troubadour business, the way m which he manages the changes of dress, voice— in fact identity, considering it is all accomplished m a few seconds— is marvellous. Mr Maccabe, in short, is a very great Protean celebrity, and there is not the slightest doubt in tho world that he will carry away from the Colonies not only the good wishes of everybody, but a very large amount of money. 1

By the inward 'Frisco steamer there were passengers for Sydney a company of musical artists, known as tho Boston Mendelssohn Quintett Company. The combination is an instrumental one, and is said to have achieved considerable success in the States. .

They have taken the Melbourne" Opera House for a short season. Mr Verdi's co-operative opera scheme is progf easing favourably. The list of shareholders and contributors is rapidly filling up, and there is every reason (says the Age) to believe that the purpose of the Association will attain a successful issue.
