WINTON.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) September 9th. A fatal accident happened to a lad about 15 years of age, at the sawmill at Limehills, on Wednesday lost. A tree falling upon him crushed the lad's head completely. In consequence of unfavourable weather, a lecture by the Rev. J. Patorson on " Dr Guthrle " was postponed. The lecture is to be delivered in about three weeks' time at the Presbyterian church, in aid of the Sabbath school funds. As a result of the recent copious rains, the Oreti River and the Winton Creek are considerably swollen. A large portion of the land being partially submerged, farming operations are much retarded. The district roads are in a very bad state. The Forest Hill tramway has now been actually commenced, Mr Bennett, the contractor, being busy clearing the bush along the line of road. A new flour-mill is in course of erection on a section almost adjoining the existing mill belonging to Mr Black. It is scarcely likely that a second one can be made to pay, but the extraordinary enterprise of our people must have an outlet— and hence the mill. Probably as the result of our increasing love of litigation, the Minister of Justice has been asked to increase the Courthouse accommodation. This is surely not one of the best omens.

A concert held in aid of the church fund by the Roman Catholics ©f this place, on Tuesday last, was well attended, and is said to have yielded very substantial additions to the ecclesiastical purse.

Tho weather continues very unsteady. On account of bush shelter, however, we escape much violent weathor experienced by our neighbours nearer the coast.
