GORE.

(FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.)] _ ," . March Bth. The weather during the past week or two has been very favourable for harvesting operations, and the ingathering of the crops is in a forward condition. The cereals are well matured and likely to yield well both as regards quantity and quality. Several self-binding wire and string-binders have been used in this district and the work done by them has been very satisfactory. At a meeting of the Presbyterian Church Committee held last Monday, ten tenders for the erection of a church were received, varying in amount from ,€1036 to £465. The offer of Mr Thomas Latham, at the latter figure, was accepted ; and in a few months we hope to see the ecliflce completed. When erected, it will be quite an ornament to the township. It is a remarkable fact that the tenders of our local tradesmen were in every case the lowest, while those from your city and Invercargill were ridiculously above the mark. | A cricket match played between the Gore Club and a team chosen in East Gore resulted in a victory for the former by 18 runa. A club, distinct from the present one, has been formed, designated the " Union." I trust that this may tend to cultivate a Bpirit of generous rivalry in this manly sport, and not, as is too often the case, become the medium of fostering the envious feelings which exist between the East and West portions of our village. " Union is strongth." 1 therefore think that an amalgamated eleven would have been better.

I hear that thp rabbit pest is again making itself felt, especially amongst the turnip crops, and several farmers have commenced the phosphorus cure. While large tracts of country remain in tho hands of the squatters, and the Government reserves are recognised as legitimate breeding-grounds, I am much afraid that the small settlers will find it up-hill work to contend against the scourge.

I notice with pleasure that Mr Green, who has latelysold his Railway Hotel, does not intend to leave the district, in which he has yet a large stake, and whose welfare he has clone much to promote. Both he and his good lady possess, and, what is much better, desei've the good wishes of their fellow townspeople.
