The Orakanui College athletic sporta were held in a paddock kindly lent by Mr K. Fergusßon forthe purpose, on Saturday last. The weather was cold and disagreeable in the morning, but cleared up pleasantly enough after, 1 o'clock. A capital day's sport was the result. Many of the friends of the boys who were competing were present, and took great' interest in the various struggles. From, the, Bpeed and endurance shown by some of the competitors, it was clear that a good deal of hard work had been done previous to the races. .Several first prizes were taken after an eager struggle, persisted in to the very last. The walking races in ' particular were won in a style that would have done credit to adults. The prizes consisted 'of silver cups and pewters, procured from Mr Kohn, Dunedin, who very kindly presented presented two handsome cups— one of oak, bound with silver, and one of plain silver — to be run for. The Eev. E. L. Stanford acted as judge, Mr W. Kainbow, as starter, Mr Menteith as handicapper, while, the , Eev, T. li, Stanley kept the time. ' ' The following is a list of events :— 100 Yards Plat RACE.-For all comers. Eight started. M'Glashan, 1 ; Watson, 2 ; C. Cantrell, 3. ' 100 Yards Plat Race.— Under 14. Eight started. Porter, 1 ; Harvey, 2 ; Drabble, 3. Running High Jump.— For all comers. Six started. M'Glashan, 1 ; 0. Cantrell, 2. • Ladies' Prize (Handicap).— Fifteen started. M'Glashan, 1 ; Stevenson, 2 ; Watson, 3. 100 Yards Flat Race.— Under 12. Six started. , W. Drabble, 1 ; H. Calcutt, 2. Hop, Step, and Jump — Under 14. Six started. Harvey, 1 ; Porter, 2 ; E. ' ' ' ' * Half-mile Flat Race.— Under 15. Handicap. Ten started. A. Orbell, 1 ; J. Drabble, 2 ;' C. Calcutta 3. This was a very good race, resulting in a close struggle at the finish. Three-legged Race.— All comers. Four pairs started. A. Orbell, Potts, 1 ; M'Glashan. C. Cantrell, 2. ■ Long Jump.— All comers. Four started. M'Glashan, 1 ; C. Cantrell, 2. , Sack Rack.— All comers. Twelve started. '"A. Orbell, 1 ; Stephenson, 2. This race afforded the usual amount of fun to 'the onlookers. : ,i • Half-mile Walking Race. — Under 12. 'Five started. H. Calcutt, 1 ; W. Drabble, 2. Hop, Step, and Jump.— All comers. Four started. M'Glashan, 1 ; C. Cantrell, 2. Consolation.— Eight started. Watson, 1 : C Cantrell, 2; Bayley, 3. The College Cup, a very_ handsome • silver cup, supported by three miniature cricket bats with a silver ball between them, was allotted to the competitor who took the largest number of points in all events. This fell to J.. M'Glashan, the style of whose running and jumping was much admired. The prizes were given away in the evening of [Saturday by Mr Stanford. We believe that this is the first occasion on which these sports have been held; and we do not doubt that they will now be an annual institution at the college, as they should be wherever boyß are being educated; •
