OTAGO INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the Otago Institute was held in the lecture-room of the Museum on Tuesday evening, and was largely attended, the room being crowded. Dr Hocken occupied the chair, and announced that Mr W Dymock was elected a member, that Mr E. W. Humphreys had re-joined, and that the annual vote of £500 to the New Zealand Institute, which had been ttirown out by the House of Representatives, had heen passed among the Supplementary Estimates The Secretary (Mr Thomson) read a letter from Professor Liversidge, of Sydney, calling the attention of members of the Otago Institute to the Geological Conference to be held at Bologna in September, 1881, and circulars from Professor Capelhm, of that city, were jitw 'fl the table. ,„ ,„ , W-jbritieal lecture on "John Stuart Mill on Mind and Sorter " was then delivered by Mr A. Montgomery, but the subject was too abstruse to permit of a condensed report of the address being given. Professor Macqreqor spoke of the lecture in very complimentary terms, and said that it was gratifying to see so many persons present at a lecture on such a subject— a subject which, of all subjects, was perhaps the most abstract and difficult. After dealing at some length with the question, he moved a vote of thanks to Mr Montgomery which, was carried by acclamation. Professor Parker exhibited adult and young specimens from the Macquarie Islands of a species of nenguin or rock-hopper, new to the New Zealand zoological region, and also a skeleton of a pea-hen, articulated in such a manner that every bone could be detached for special examination. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 24th inst., and papers will be read by Mr Arthur and Mr Skey.
