CUSTOMS REVENUE. The following revenue was received at the Custom house, Dunedin, during the week ending Wednesday

THE WEEK'S BUSINESS. Witness Ukfick, Wednesday Evening. The past has Toeen a very quiet month for trade, and values of goods have undergone but slight alteration. The Bygdo brings a fresh supply of kerosene oil, of which the market was' much in want. Of her shipment of 6000 cases, however, only a portion remains at this port. Painters' oils are very low in price, owing to considerable additions to stocks by recent arrivals. Raw and boiled linseed are selling at 3s lOd per gallon all round. Colza oil is quitted at 4s 6d per gallon. The. Invercargill brings a further supply of 2500 barrels of cement— not too much, however, for present requirements, nor have prices altered from our last quotations. Fencing wire is a shade easier. No. Bis quoted at £16, but for a parcel a concession on this price is accepted. The sugar market is weak. Some largo sales of whites have been made during the week for another port, but as the local trade is fully supplied with this class values have not been affected. The Wakatipu, which sailed from Sydney on the 3rd, brings the New Zealand portion of the new season's teas, transhipped from the Mcnmuir. During the week Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn, and Co. held an auction sale of general merchandise, It was of small interest to the trade, however, and but few lines were offered in which we take an interest. We noticed that De Roubaix's candles were placed at 9Jd and 9}d per lb, and sardines at 8s Id for halves, and 4s 8d for quarters. The grain market continues to exhibit a slight improvement. Prime malting samples of wheat meet with ready sale at up to 3s lid. Feed oats command up to Is sd, and milling Is Cd per bushel. Barley is without change, and there are no transactions to report.

The demand was sufficient to clear off the supply at some improvement on last week's rates. Bullocks fetched from £8 to £13 2s 6d, and cows from £6 to £11 per head. We sold on account of Messrs Smith and Dornwell the first draft of magnificent well-bred cows and heifers from tho celebrated herd of Messrs Fleming and Hedley, Seadown Estate, at from £9 f s to £11 per head. The former sold at from 9s 9d to 12s 9d, and the latter at from 13s 9d to 16s 3d per head. In consequence of the full supply at last week's market, butchers had not cleared off stocks, and the demand was not brisk at scarcely previous rates. We sold 140 head of crossbreds on account of Mr J. C. Gilchrist at 16s. Quotation for prime mutton barely 25d per lb. Sheepskins.— We had a full catalogue at our weekly sale on Monday, which met with good competition, and was cleared at prices showing some improvement on those of previous week. 03 UU. THE LONDON MARKETS. We take the following from the circular of \h& New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, dated London, June 17th :— " The growing cereal crops, both in this country and on the Continent, have been much benefited by the rainfall of the past three weeks, and there seems so far a strong probability of quite an average harvest, if not of an early one. Greater eagerness to realise is shown by tho holders of stocks both of English and foreign wheat, but millers refuse to make any but retail purchases, although the quantity they have on hand is unusually light. Quotations for wheat on the spot are now weaker, partly under the pressure of heavy American shipments and partly from the general idea that the market will gradually give way as the season advances. As the various reports from all wheat-growing centre continues to bo favourable, this idea seems likely to be correct, and as matters stand at present everything appears to point to a low scale of values during the summer and autumn. Latest advices from America quote a fall equal to 6 cents a bushel, or 2s per quarter, with a large stock of old crop yet to be shipped. Forward arrivals are generally difficult to place, and are freoly offered at low rates.' THE LABOUR MARKET. Mr Skene reports, under date August 4 :— A decided, improvement is observable in the labour market, the demand being mostly for hotel people, station cooks,, couples, dairy helps, men, women, and boys. The season is now fast advancing, and we shall need a 1 farm and station people. Rabbits are occupyingmore and more attention every day, and it wijl take more men, money, poison, > and Acts of Parliament to eradicate them, than those interested aro aware of. There is always a good deal of misery and hardship in our midst (in many cases preventibjc), and plenty o£ complaining letters in the newspapers, with good foundation, too. But how does it happen that of the many thousands who have succeeded in securing: comfoit and independence in New Zealand, not one is manly enongh to state his side of the question ? It istheir interest a#d duty to do so. The building trade, is active for the season, but, as usual, there are toomany would-be contractors, indeed, there are nearly as many masters as there are journeymen. It is difficult to please shopmen, clerks, and city-bred men at present. There is an increasing demand for sensible female Bervants in all departments for town and) country, stations, fanners, private houses^ and hotels. Wages are still low, but for good people fair wages WO given. The season or win so n,
