THE LATE CAPTAIN TALL.
Wo rut- ret to learn that no traces have hcen found of the late Captain Stephen Tall, who was drowned in the ketch Anna. Captain Tall arrived at Poit Chalmers by the ship Arabia, from Melbourne, in 1801. About I' 2 months afterwards he took command of the schooner Surprise, and traded to Waikouaiti for about a year ; at the expiration of that time he left her and and took charge of the cutter Swan, a \ cssol he had formerly commanded in Melbourne. In this little vessel he remained for nearly two yoais, part of which time he traded to Oainaru, and part ho was employed in the pilot service, for which the cutter' had been engaged. After the termination of his engagement he proceeded to Greymouth with the Swan, and meeting bad weather she carried away her rudder and was stranded. On his return to Otago ho joined the s.s. Taiaroa as chief officer, under the late Captain Thomas Robertson, whom he succeeded in command of the steamer. After leaving the Taiaroa he took charge of the stern-wheel steamer Tuapcka, then plying 1 on the river Molynoux, and hero he suffered severe pecuniary troubles. After this and during the last few years Captain Tall has had the command of the schooner Jane Hannah, and several other small vessels We are sorry to learn (from a reliable source) that Captain Tall has left a widow with four helpless children totally unprovided tor. We hope the numerous friends he possessed will adopt some measures to assist Mrs Tall in her bereavement.
