LOVELL'S FLAT.

(from our own correspondent.) May 24th.

Very heavy rain fell here ou Thursday night last, and continued in a ceaseless downpour for seven or eight hours. Creeks rose suddenly, and on Friday the prospect was decidedly a watery one. Some damage was done in several instances, but nothing serious resulted except to Mr Carmichael's property, the water acting on that iv a somewhat peculiar manner. It seams that through some mistake in altering a culvert a great body of water accumulated above the road embankment facing Mr Carmichael's steading. Suddenly the bank gave way, and the water rushed with great force through the yard, submerging the stable and barn to a depth of several feet. The grain and grass seed were damaged ; a horse was with difficulty rescued; calves and poultry _ were drowned, and, curious to relate, Eomo pigs were washed from itheir styes and deposited on the top of a straw stack, and such was the force of the water that the stack of straw was carried bodily away— tbe poroien marines still in possession— and deposited in an adjoining field. It is rumoured that the Bruce County Council will be held responsible for the damage done. The heavy fall of rain seems to have been the tail end of the rough weather, it having been very mild sinoe,!

The local Benevolent Institution Carnival Committee are working energetically. Whether it is the unique character of the donation receivable, or the cause beiug such a " quid ane," that causes the contributions to^ flow in so freely, I am not aware ; certain ifc is that each and all are giving freely, and with a heartiness that is pleasing to observe. The local correspondent of the Clutha Leader makes the following novel suggestion as a help in raising the wind :— " I would suggest to all the sportsmen throughout Otago to set apart one day's shooting or coursing, and forward the game to the Bazaar Committee." The idoa commeuds iteelf, and if carried out in its enfc Edby, substantial aid would no doubt acorue.
