(lleuteu's Special.) London, May 19fch.

It is announced from Washington that President Hayes has invited Congress to consider the course of action the Government should pursue in regard to outrages which took place some time since on the American fishermen at Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, and especially in view of the refusal of the Marquis of Salisbury, as Foreign Secretary in the last Administration, to accede to the demand of the American Secretary of State for compensation from England for loss of boats and nets belonging to the fishermen. The matter in dispute between England and America is seriously occupying public attention in both countries.

Three per cent. ; consols, 99§. Adelaide wheat, per 4961b, ex warehouse, 533 6d ; flour, per 2801b, ex warehouse, 38s ; pig-iron, 51a ; leather, ll£d. At the wool sales to-day 10,200 bales were offered— making a total of 235,700 bales catologued since the opening. The tone of the sale was dull.

The John Elder has arrived with the mails via Brindisi, which were delivered in London to-day. May 20th.

A meeting of the Conservative party was held to-day, at which Earl Beaconsfield made a speech. His Lordship referred to the result of the elections, and said he could only attribute the defeat of the Conservatives to a desire felt by the electors for a change in the Ministry. He stated that he would retain the leadership of his party, and advocated dignified opposition to the Liberals and the formation of a proper local Conservative organisation throughout the country. Earl Carnarvon, who resigned his position in the late Ministry in 1878 in consequence of its Eastern policy, was present at tho meeting. Three per cent, consols, 99^.

At the wool sales to-day 7000 bales were offered, making a total of 261,000 catalogued since the opening. There waa a, better demand.

May 23rd. The Great Powers have come to an understanding, and have written a letter to Turkey in regard to the non-execution of nhe Treaty of Berlin so far as it relates to Greece and Montenegro. The Great Powers threaten that a European Conference will be held at Berlin in July, failing a speedy settlement of existing differences.

London, May 24th. Mr Parnell has given notice in the House of Commons of a motion setting forth the necessity for granting Home Rule to Ireland.

Five per cent. New Zealand 10.40 loan, 103 ; five per cent. New Zealand loan, 1889, 104 J. The wheat market is dull. Tallow is firm.

At the wool sales to-day 10,600 balea were offered, making a total of 272,500 bales catalogued since the opening. Afc to-day's auction prices were firmly maintained.

Suez, May 22nd. The Orient Oo.'s steamship ChimboraZO, Homeward bound, arrived here to-day. Berlin, May 21st.

A Ministerial bill has been introduced into the Lower House of the German Parliament for the revision of the Maylaws. The changes proposed will provide for a large concession to the Catholics in Germany, and will meet the views of the Vatican.

Calcutta, May 22nd.

The Viceroy, in accordance with the views of the Liberal party, has been officially instructed to close the campaign in Afghanistan with the least possible delay. It is, however, considered doubtful when the war will close, owing to the hostile tribes still continuing fighting desultorily, although not of a very serious nature.

Cape Town, May 22nd. It is officially announced that Sir Bartle Frere has consented to remain Governor and High Commissioner of Cape Colony, it being understood for the express purpose of assisting the proposed confederation.

Paris, May 20th. The war-ship Finisterre has sailed for Melbourne with the French exhibits for the forthcoming Exhibition. Chili, May 19th. The ship Antipodes has put into Valparaiso in a leaky state, having to discharge cargo to enable repairs to be effected.
