MESSES FLEMING AND HEDLEY'S SALE.
(Conden«cd from tb.9 North Ofcago Times.)
On the first day of this important sale tba great interest taken in it was demonstrated by tb© Jarga attendance, there being between 500 1 and 700 persons present from all parts of the Colony. It can hardly be said that the prices realised were at all equal to the value received. The same animals a. year ago— or as they might a year bonee — would be worth considerably more than the amount they cost their purchasers'. This waa more noticeable in the young stock, some of whioh went at a fourth, of their real value. In a year or two then* cannot fail to prove highly profitable, to fche fortunate purchasers. The highest; prices realised for horses were as follows .-—Young Vanquisher, Hon. R. Campbell, 390 fjnineas ; Glenlyoti, T, Y. Duncan, 165 guineas ;■ Young Gipsy, Hon. M. Holmes, 102^ guineas ; Moss Rose, J. Keid, Elderalie, 85 guineas ; ' Young Duke, Thomas Dowling, 70 guineas; Bine Bell, Matheaon, 57£ guineas ; Kate : Hon. It. Campbell, 55 guineas ; Lass o' Gowrie, Thomas Roberfsan, 55 guineas ; GipHy Counteis (yearling), Hon. M. Holmes, 55 guineas; Miss Hejjartv, E. Menlove, 55 guineas ; Tarn Glod, R. Stalker, 52£ guinoas ; Jessie Gllohrist, J. Borfcoa, 52£ guineas ; Flora Macdonald, R. Stalker, 52£ guineas; Master Symons, John M'Alkn, 50 guineas. Th« rem&indar of the prices fetched ranged from 6 to 45 guineas. On the second day tbe bidding approached the value of the animals offered nearer than did that of the preceding diy. The quality of the stock was something superb, and several of the mares and fillies sold are sufficiently good to be 'matched with anything in tho Colonies. Maggie Lauder 11. (Mis« Donalds^,) is one of the grandest fillies ever Been in Oamarn, and when she was knocked down to the bid of ivir E. Menlove, tbree cbeers were given for that gentleman, The prica was 180 guineas. Maggie Lau-ier 11. ia by Young Banker. Annie liauria 1., by Sir William Wallace, is another splsndid animal, and was also purchased by Mr Menlove for 137& guineas. This gentleman is evidently determined to maintain his reputation an a breeder and owner of firstclass stock. Nannie, a mare purchased by Mr John Rei<i, of Eklerelia, is a grand beasfe, also by Sir William Wallace, and waa a prizataker at eevernl shows. Her price waa 120 guineaß, Mr John Reid also purchased Princess of Wales, her price being lOOguineas. Maggie M'Cormiek was bought by Mr J. Russell for 100 guineas, and goes to Southland. Mr W. Boag, of Canterbury, secured Clarinda for 115 guineas. It may be said that the pick of _ the stock yet remains in the district, and this fact must be taken as very complimentary to the judgment aud enterprise of our local breeders. Two years ago the same animal i would have brought perhaps doubla the money, and the prices obtained are therefore not indicative of their real value, but rather the r<»Bult of a greatly tightened money market. Still, nothing but first-class animals would have realised, at the present time, the prices obtained on the second day, and this fact must aofc as an incentive to those who rear draught stock of the description nnder notice. The following are the principal animal* sold, with the names of tbe purchasers, and the amount ob« tamed in gaineaa :—
