NOTES AND QUERIES.
JOHN Davies, Waikaka.— Mr Beverley kindly furnishes us with the following in answer to your question s— The following list of the most reliable parallaxes and proper motions of stars is given by Dr Glyden. I have added a column giving the distanoe ia billions of miles. i «j I s £ 1 Is 1
There are a number of small stars in the southern hemisphere having large proper motions, whose distances may be determined when a sufficient number of observations have been made for the purpose. Periodic oomets conform strictly to Kepler's laws, only they are more subject to perturbation than planets. The orbits of pometa are first determined on the assumption that they are parabolic, which requires three correct observations at different times. Further observations are required to determine whether the orbit of a comet is elliptic or hyperbolic. If ifcs velocity at perihelion is not greater than 14142 times that of a planet at the mean distanoe of the perihelion, the orbit ia elliptic j but if it be greater, the orbit (is hyperbolic, and the comet will never return, unless it should chanoe to be entrapped by passing too near in front of some of the larger planets, as was the case with Lassell's comet. D. 0. M., Inveroargill.— We believe that it is nob the custom to remove the name of a Justice of the Peace on account of bankruptcy. Andesson's Bat asks if it is advisable to take a little milk from a cow before calving when the milk flow is excessive. — Yes. It is necessary to simply ease the udder (if getting hard) by taking a little off, and rubbing the udder with Marsh Mallow Ointment to prevent inflammation. TO CORiiisPONDBNTS. J. S.— We cannot see what end would bo sewed by the publication of your communication.
