♦ ■ • WAIKOUAITI RIFLES. At the monthly inspection of the Waikouaiti Volunteers on Tuesday evening, a circular was read from the Christchurch Keview Committee, when 20 members signified their intention of attending the review. The Company then proceeded to elect a sub-lieutenant, when Colour-sergeant Sutherland was unanimously chosen for the post. Captain Orbell also presented the winners with the Company's belt and medal. The following were the principal scores iv the Belt competitions, which were at 200, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each r wige : — Ist 2nd Match. Match. Tl. Corporal Law . . . . 53 45 — 98 Colour-Sergt Sutherland .. 52 46 — 98 Corporal M'Lay .. .. 44 43—87 Volunteer Dry . . . . 41 45—86 Sergeant Hood . . . . 40 48—85 For the medal five shots were fired at 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards, and the highest scorers were : — Colour- sergeant Sutherland, 60 ; Corporal Seatten, 55 ; Volunteer Dry, 54 j Corporal M'Lay, 53 ; Corporal Law, 48.
B BATTERY OF ARTILLERY.
The B Battery of Volunteers were inspected at the Garrison Hall last evening by Major Jack, Lieutenant Lambert being in, command. There were present : — 1 lieutenant, 1 sub-lieu-tenant, 4 sergeants, 1 trumpeter, 60 gunners, and 1 staff -sergeant.
The Golos states that the total of the RuaBian customs revenue for 1880 is estimated at 84,821,200 roubles, or net, 77,708,609 roubles, after deducting th« expense s of collection, calculated at 7,112,591 roubleß.
About 15 000 varieties of colour are employed by the mosaic-workers of It^me, and each of these varieties has 50 shades; so that in all 750,000 tints are afforded.
