GLRNKENICH.
(feom oub own oobbespondent.) February 21s*. Matters agricultural were going i new rnmingly till Bunday last, when it etarted t) blow a regular ga'e from the N.w. A large amount of grain was ii,)e at tbe time, and consequently the wind did a grast deal of damage. In some cases the com was literally threshed out, while the stiaw was left so bent and broken as to render the usual modus opemndi quite out of the question j for in most cams the corn can only be cut in one direction, which entails upon tho farmers a great deal of extra labour and timi\ Here also we see the absurdity of taking the returns of produce before it comes to maturity. A constable was all through th's district just a day or two before the gale set in, and farmers who gave in 40 bushels— l know some have given ia as high as 70— will in all probability not have more than 20. And of courso, when the returns are published, tho corn merchants Bee that there is a large quantity of grain in tho country, and keep the price at a very low figure. Surely the farmers should oppose the taking of the returns at bo early a date, and perhaps our Farmers' Club will discuss this important matter at a future meeting. While the gale was raging; on Sunday two fires were hard at work in tho Taparml bush, and judging from the vait column of smoke that rolled over thu Blue Mountains, one of the conflagrations must have done a great deal of damage, Part of the township was ia danger by the smaller fire, and several of the inhabitants had to bestir themselves.
Work is progressing slowly on our railway. The motto of the energetic contractors for th's line must be ♦'slow but sure," in this oase at least. However, matters are carried on in a rather queer style at the terminus, which is in the township of Keieo. Several persona bought sections a short time ago, and ■ome of these are being appropriated tor the railway Iheds without any notice to the owners. The matte* has been placed before the Minister of Works, aud it is to he hoped he will investigate it.
