THE CROPS.
The whole of the Southland district has suffered much this year from the unusually dry weither. A correspondent who haß recently visited the Western district, between Otautau and Winfcon, says that he saw a number of crops of oats being cut wLich would not go 40 bu-tlieN to the a?re, and a few wheat crops of about 20 to 25 b'lahtls. In only one iuscance oil tie nee a really good crop, aad this was about 200 acres of barley ah Baysvvater, about 14 miles from Otautau, Thia crop was calculated to yiell 60 bushels to tbe acre, and would have gone more, but a good deal of it is laid. Our Timaru correspondeat writes : — The new wheat is beginning to onie in bow, and is turning out of msi excellent quality. Tho mil'trs are giving 4i a bushel for small parcels.
