The German papers continue to speak of the failure of Godefroy's Company as occasioned through a British trick, A proposal has been made that the Government should grant a subsidy guaranteeing a dividend of 5 per cent, to shareholders of the new German company assuming the busiueis of the late Godefroy Company. Prince Bismarck is favourable, but the scheme meets with violent opposition in Parliamentary circles.
A fund is bti^g collected in London to compensate Edmund Galley for his long and unjusfc suffering in New South Waloa on a charge of murder, committed in May, 1836.
Largo quantities of Canadian salmon are imported to England by veesels fitted with refrigerators.
H M.S. Raleigh shortly leaves England with reliefs for the Australian pquadron.
The Comus sailed on December 24th. She visits the Crczets, with the object of ascertaining if there are any indications of the wreck of theKnowsley Hall.
It is suggested that a few fast light-armoured cruisers should bo stationed always in Australasian waters, to protect the Colonial coal depots of the South Pacific from attack. It is suggested that the Colonies should contribute towards their maintenance.
The Nautical Gazette (U.S.) states that the Russian Government are making extensive preparations for a naval aggression in case of a war with England, In addition to cruisers, large numbers of torpedoes of a new design are perfected, and scores of handy little torpedo boats, requiring only two men to manage, are building secretly, and already gome of these small crafts havo bean sent to the Pacific and China.
A Mortgage Company of South Australia, with a nominal capital of L 500,000, in a hundred thousand shares, on which only LI per share will be called up, has been successfully floated at Edinburgh, the brokers being Messrs Bell, Begg, and Cowan. Mr Begg is the son of the doctor who lived in New Zealand.
General Roberts has assured Mahomed Musa Khan, Yakoob'a son, of honourable treatment. He is at Ghuzaee.
The Viceroy of India publicly stated that the object of the Afghan War was not the acquisition of territory, but firm foundations for the establishment of a durable peace for India, and solid self-acting guarantees for the future good behaviour of India's neighbours.
