Inveboargill, February 19th.
A reaper and binder content was held yesterday under the auspices of the Southland Agricultural Society. The Marsh haivester, with Deering's binder, made magnificent work, not a single band breaking. The first priz?, a gold medal, fell to a machine entered by Mason and Sbruthtrs, of Ciiristchurch, and worked by their man ; the sec 'nd fr'za was awarded to the Osborne' wire binder.
February 20th. The sale of the Oatlanda Estate, about nine milod iruin town, was the most successful sale b«ld her* for a long time. The land is of firstclass quality, and tbe bidding was very spirited. The highest rate obtained was L2O per acre. The average was between Ll2 and Ll3.
Oamaru, Febraary 20th. The Lincolnshire delegates left Oamaru today. It is said they express a partiality for the lands of this and the Timaru districts over anything they have seen in New Zealand, February 21st. At about 20 minutes past 3 o'clock this morning, .when the steamer Beautiful Star was off Shag Point, the look-out man reported to the mate, who was in charge of the watcb, that a man whom he had seen rolling on the forecastle had rolled to the side, where he caugat, but afterwards rolled off. He called out that there was a man overboard, and the steamer waa stopped. A boat manned by the raate and three men was lowered, and v search kept up until morning, but no trace could be found of the man, whose name is supposed to be Gilchrist, and who is believed to have a cousia ia Oamaru.
