IMPORTS AND EXPORTS, 1879.
The total imports for 1879, as compared with those of the provious year are as follow :— 1879. 1878. Total imports .. £8,373,233 £8,755,663 The four chief ports stand as follows : — 1879. • 1878. Auckland .. £1,476,325 £1,408,823 Wellington .. 1,517,713 1,440,332 Lyttelton .. 1,579,001 1,928,744 Dunedin .. . 2,598,238 _ 2,079,728 Tho most remarkable feature here is the great decline at Lyttelton, equal to about the whole of the amount of tho deficiency in the imports of the Colony as compared with tho previous year. The exports stand as follows : — 1879. 1878. Total exports .. £5,742,916 £6,015,525 The four chief ports compare thus :— 1879. 1878. Auckland .. £ 551,849 £ 544,112 Wellington .. 838,901 783,047 Lyttelton .. 1,279,622 1,712,874 Dunedin .. 1,600,449 1,619,954 Here, again, Lyttelton shows by far the largest decline, the other ports being almost stationary. Doubtless the decline is chiefly owing to low prices of agricultural produce. On tho wheat shipped to England, however, thero were considerable subsequent surpluses remitted to shippers.
