A novel and safe method of shipping horaes has beon discovered by Mr Warren, a large consigner of Australian horses to the Indian market. He walks them on board ship across a stage, puts them four at a time into a box duly partitioned off, and they are then lowered in it down the hatch. This obviates all risk of the injury that is so prevalent when the old system of slinging is adopted. The Hay thoroughbred racer Calabar was burned to death in his stable a fortnight ago. The Grlenormisfcon yearlings will be sold on March Ist, the youngsters including stock by King Cole, Bethnal Green, and Angler. # Henry Cohen, a Melbourne tobaccouist, haa been fined Lls, and 10 guineas costs, for drawing a sweep on the last Melbourne Cup. He was. proceeded a^ainat on account of there being suspicion circumstances con-i nected with the drawing. Mr Hector Norman Simson, a very old coionist, aad a great racing man in the earlier days of the Australian turf, died on the 29 th ult. The five yearlings of Mr Jaraes Wilson's breeding at St. Albans were sold by auction on the 30th ult., and realised the sum of 2650 guineas, or the fine average of 530 guineas each. The Hon. W. J. (Jlarke bought the bay colt by King of the Ring — Musidora for 850 guineas, and the bay filly by King of the Ring— Mischief . ,Mr W. Brand bought tho bay filly by King of the Ring— Maid-of- AllWork for 650 guineas, and the bay colt by King of tho Ring— Sea Spray for 250 guineas. The bay filly by King of ihe Ring— Eleanor fell to Mr j. Wiggins, at 100 guineas. For the Adelaide Cup of 600 soys. the following entries have been received : — Orator Ttichmond High Jlnko Bogworth Locbaber First Water Mountaineer Electricity Prid9 of tho Vale Thane Buccaneer Filibuster Rivalry Glenorm'ston Don Carlos Supple jacK Pawnbroker Warlock Fishhook Hyllus Viceroy Pollio Josephine Arabella colt Belladrum Mr Jellett ha 3 accepted with Richmond and Filibuster for the Hobart Town raceß, to be held next week, so that there can no longer be any hope of his coming to New Zealand. The Geelong meeting waa a great success, and the principal race>< thereat will be found detailed below. It will be seen that Lurline's son Motea, who is described as still wanting time, did not rnn into » place ia the Sires' Produce Stakes. Meg MerrilieH, the winner, must be a clipping filly, for after losing 10 lengths at the start, she darted through her horses like lightning, and soon getting a score of lengths in front of everything, won very ei-ily. She is the first of Gang Forward's stock that we have noticed running, and she has given a cha' racter as a sire to Sir T. Elder's imported stallion, who won the Two Thousand Guineas for Mr W. S. Crawford in 1873, and ran second to Doncaater for the Derby. In the Geelon? Handicap Wellington ran tho mile and a-half in 2 mm. 40 sec.
