TAIERT AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY'S ANNUAL SHOW.
Committee of Management :— Mr James Robertson, president ; Mr James Shaud, vicepresident; Messrs John Sutherland, J B Blair, Robert Charters, Thomas Craig, James Shand, John Allan (Hope Hill), David Grant, James Forrest, John Andrew, James Aitken, Thomas Broadway, James Gow, John Shaw, Peter Grant (Gnwrie), SamueliYoung, George Pram, Donald Reid, John Roberts, James Allan, M Carmicbael, Arthur Robertson, John Findlay, James Millar, W F Christie, Donald Manson, James Allan (Hope Hill), Walter Grieve, William Jaffray, John Shennan, James Cullen. The show held on Boxing Day at Mosgiel was in many respects an unqualified success. The weather, all important to a show as to moit other things, was simply superb. There was a very large concouree of people present — many from Dunedin, Tokomairiro, and Cluthn, and a number also from the Northern districts, and the entries iv the majority of classewere very numerous. Ayrahires in cattle, Leicesters is Bheep, and draughts in horses were best represented, but the shorthorns in cattle were also an excellent class. It was in draught horses that the show particularly excelled. Mr J. Shand's Taieri Tom carried off first honours in his class, beating Duncan Gray, who had it all his own way at Tokomairiro and again &fc Waikouaiti. In mares and geldings the Taieri breeders held their own. Mrs Nimino, who did not show at Duuedin, took the first prize for a pair, beating such well known pairs as those belonging to Messrs P. Grant and R Clark. Without farther detailing the results, which may best be gathered from a perusal of the prize-list, it may be pointed out that a very considerable injustice was done owners in several instances by the absurd rule being enforced that special entry for champion prizes was rt quired. What is the use of an owner entering and showing an animal for champion which he ia perfectly certain cannot win, seeing that he has already heon beaten in his class ? Aa is done in all other places, the judges should be left to determine which animal out of the whole they have seen in any class is the beat in the yard. The special-entry rule operated very harshly yesterday. For instance, in the draughts class Mr Shand had not made an entry of his Taieri Tom, not imagining one required, and the result was he could not compete for the champion class. The same thing occurred with regard to Mr Shand's exhibits in shorthorn cows, Messrs M 'Far lane's bull in Ayrahires, and others. Thus in some cases the animal awarded the champion medal was certainly by no means the best on the ground. Amongst the special exhibits on the ground were selections of woollens and tweedings from the Moegiei Factory; a hedge-cutter worked by two men and two horses, which was tried on the ground and gave every satisfaction ; and several buggies from the workshop of Messrs Sinclair and Morton, The gate-money realised was about L7O, which at Is a head represents Borne 1400 people, while members of the Society, and youngsters also, were admitted free. The following is thd PRIZE LIST. CATTLEs BHOBTHOBNS. Judges'—Messrs Boag (Christchurch), Lyon (Southland), C Moore (Dunedin).
