Lone Hand, 13st, was scratched. The race needs no description, as Te Whetu led over the first two fences, Little John over the third, and Te Whetu obstinately refused the fourth j Little John, who fell at the top fence, thus merely going round to win. Time, Bomewhat under half an hour. Tradesmen's Handicap, of 100 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 5 soys- each for acceptors. Nomination of 8 soys to go to the fund. One mile. Mr Campbell made the best start he has yet effected during the meeting, and they all left the post in a body, with the exception of Marie Antoinette, who was soon with them. The first to drop off was Elfin King, and Billingsgate showed in front rounding the top, having Maritana and York close handy, Foul Play lying three or four lengths off. Nolan kept his colt going in the straight, and Maritana was the first beaten of the leading four. When she died away, Foul Play came up with a rattle, but though he reached Mr Walters' colt's quarters he .could not get home, and the Aucklander won by half a length, the same distance separating Foul Play and York.
Cheistohurch, November 14tb.
To-day was wet and showery, and the attendance was very small. The railway returns of Monday and yesterday show that more people went by railway on those days than last year, but the total will now show a decrease for the three days, though -the Governor was on the Sound. The racing *on the third day of the etropolitan is usually good, and the sport of yesterday was no exception to the rule. The time iof the different races was not so good, perhaps, but the course had become slippery, owing to the rain that had fallen. Templeton brought some grist %o Bay's mill, and he landed the Plate easily enough, Grand Duchess, who was second, not being in form, though she is a fine racing mare, and ought to turn out ,'& clinker in another year, and with more condition on her. Betrayer, on whom young Clarke had the mount, , did- not move aa freely as yesterday, and, in addition to this,- the saddle got loose, though Clarke retained his seat until the winning-post was passed. He was sent to grass ahundred yards farther on. ThePublicans'Steepleohase brought out the whole of those coloured on the card, and was more of a race than the fiasco of yesterday. Little John again carried O'Brien's colours to .the front. To Whetu, who shaped very; differently to his performance of yesterday/ thiß time mended his manners, and ran second, though he jumped in very slovenly fashion. Old Sttverstream managed to fall for once , in a way. The Agent showed what' a good horse he .is by carrying his 12st and reaching third place, fencing well throughout. The, chestnut was manifestly unfit. When the Metropolitan weights were issued, Foul Play at 7st 131b was immediately pounced upon as the pick, and he fairly frightened the pwners of horses weighted above him out of the race. The consequence was that he was the highest weight accepting, and therefore each of those contesting had to put up 151b more than was originally allotted to them. , This militated less against Foul Play's chance than in the case of several others engaged, especially such a pony as Libeller, who, however, ran well in the actual contest. Raising the weights, too, gave Ray a chance of putting Wattie on Hornby instead of trusting to a small boy, and the big colt isone to whom a few pounds makes but little difference. He ran a game, race, but could not foot it ~ with Foul Play when they raced home together, and Mr Mallock .scored another win. Libeller, as we have stated, ran a good colt, but York, as usual, pulled third for a mile. Neither he nor any of the rest had anything to say in the finish. The Selling Race proved the certainty the betting indicated — that was, for Sinking Fund, as Nolan rode abominably on Billingsgate, who certainly ought te have won. The two-year-olds carried so much overweight that their performance counts for nothing. The Consolation Race showed us York as a winner^, though he carried the top weight— 9sfc ; bat as Laertes, at 7st 101b, was second, the performance was not a very gaudy one. The Hack Race wound up the meeting, during which some very good racing has taken place, and the money has been pretty equally, divided amongst several stables, though Messrs Butler, E. Cutts, Mason .and Vallance were amongst the unlucky ones. The following is an account of the races : — Cbbisiohdboh Plata, of 150 soys, added to a sweep stakes ol 6 iovs each. Second horse to lave his stake. Winners of weight-for-Bge races in one event since August Ist, 1879, to carry the followhig penalties : — Of 200 soys, 51b extrj.; of 560 sovb, 71b. Penalties not to be accumulative Maidenß at starting allowed — for 3 yrs, 61b ; 4 yrs, 101b ; 5 yrs and upwards, 141b. Once round and a distance. Templeton went off at the fall of the flag, and led the two young ones past the stand and round the bottom of the course, the pace being moderate. At Redwood's the filly was lying second, and the colt a length and a-half behind her. These positions they retained till past Ford's and round the top turn, where they both made an .effort to catch the old horse which was unavailing, and Ray held on and won easily by three lengths, which might have been more. Publicans' Stebpleoiiabb Handicap, of 75 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 5 sov3 for each acceptor ; second horse to save his Btake. About two miles. Mr D O'Brien'3 b g Little John, 5 yrs, lOst (d. Osborne) 1 Mr P Butler's eh g Te Whetu, aged, llbt 7ib (ALyford) 2 Mr P Butler's eh g The Agent, 6 yrs, 12st 71b (Stewart) 3 Mr T Lyford'a g a Silverstream, aged, lOat 91b (T LjforU) 0 Mr J Luaa'a b g Robin Hood, aged, lOst (W Clifford) 0 Betting : 2 to 1 agst Te Whetu, 4 to 1 agst Agent, 4 to 1 Silverstream, 5 to 1 Robin Hood and Little John. Mr Butler declared to win with Te Whetu. Silverstream showed the way over the first fence, which all negotiated in safety, but Robin Hood, who jumped the wing hurdles, had to go back and jump the fence itself. Over the stand hurdles Silverstream was first, followed by Little John, Te Whetu, and The Agent, and in this order they passed' the stand, the pace being only a canter. Round the bottom turn they closed up together, but at Redwood'a Silverstream and Little John raced away with the lead for the next fence, over which the first four got safely, Te Wbetu, however, jumping very indifferently. Here Robin Hood, who had been running a stern chase, again refused, and was out of tb.9 race. On the far side of the course Little John increased his lead of Silveratream to some 20 lengths, and led over the doubls, where the grey came down. Butler'a two went on in pursuit of O'Brien's horse, but, though they decreased the gap considerably, they never got on terms with Little John, 'and he won by rather more than two lengths from Te Whetu, The Agent pulling up. MErROFOMTAN Handicap, of 100 soys, added to a I »Tr«epstakes of 6 sovb each for acceptors ; second ' bor'sa to save his stake ; entries, 3 soys, to go to the fund. One mile and a-half. Soukar made himself conspicuous at the pest by rearing, and when Mr Campbell Bent them away to an otherwise good start he lost some lengths before going after them. Libeller cut out the work, Hornby being close behind him, and Foul Play lying on Ray's colt's quarters opposite the stand on the far Bide, and York, pulling very hard, ran into third place, and Foul Play dropped back a length or two. The two three-year-olds were some lengths in front when they turned into the straight, but Hornby had dispossessed Libeller of the lead. Foul Play came on third, and having Libeller beaten at the rails, he collared Hornby at the stand and beat him home by a short half-length ; Libeller, three lengths away, third. Time, 2 mm. 45 sec. Selling Race, of 50 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 6 soys each. ■Weight for age. The winner to be sold by auction immediately after the race for 400 soys, any surplus to go to the funds. They all got away together, bnt Billingsgate and Sinking Fund soon took a clear lead of the others, and save that the latter dropped back a bit, the same positions were maintained into the straight, half-way up which Mr Walters' colt looked all over a winner. The boy on Sinking Fund, however, persevered, and getting alongside Billingsgate Nolan commenced to ride very "jolly," and the old chestnut gelding finally won by a length, On Dit an indifferent third. Time, 1 mm. 22£ sec. The winner was knocked down to Mr Stead for 110 guineas. The Consolation Handicap of 60 soys. Entrance, 2 soys, to go to the fund. Post entries. One mile. Marie Antoinette was quickest on her legs, and in company with Grand Duchess was in front to the turn. When fairly in the line for home, both fillies were beaten, and York coming on took the lead, which he maintained past the winning-post, winning the last race ,of the meeting by three lengths— Laertes, ridden out, finishing as far in front of Grand Duchess. • y
