OTARIA PLOUGHING MATCH.
The Otaria first annual Ploughing Match was held on the 15th August, in a paddock belonging to Mr Templeton, and immediately in front of the Otaria Hotel. The attendance of on- lookers was not so large as it would have been, had the weather bsen less severely cold, but the number of competitors was, considering the circumstances under which the match was got up, exceedingly large. There was altogether 19 ploughs in the field, 10 double, and 9 single iurrows — really an excellent turn out. The paddock was one eminently suited for the purpose, and the ground altogether in pretty fair condition, although a little brittle and hard to lay. The work done during the day was on the whole very creditable, and vastly superior in many respects to that done at the majority of matohes. The arrangements made by the working committee, Messrs Paterson, Jno. Couperthwaite jnr., Rogerson, Fraser, and Elliot, were such as rendered the match in every particular a thorough success, and it is to be hoped that the future meetings in this district, will be as well conducted, and as successful as this, the_ first one, was. The weather as we have said was very cold, but otherwise propitious. The Judges were Meest* Jas. Hay, Waikaka ; Alex. Orr, Clinton ; and H. Dickson, Mataura. The decisions of these gentlemen were considered just, and the most general satisfaction was expressed with their verdicts. The following i 3 the prize list : — Class A — Double-pukrow.
