New Pltmouth, August 27th. The prisoner Orr, alias Hall, was captured at 1 o'clock .to-day at Stony River. He was brought in, arriving at about 6 o'clock, and was again placed in the gaol here.
Gbahamstown, August 27th. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day a man named Kemp was fined L 5 for shooting and attempting to steal a pig from the Maoris. Kemp was captured by the Maoris after a long chase, the Natives firing at him. Sir John Coode's report re the Thames has arrived.
Wellington, August 26fch. Twenty-one youug Ngatipcrju ara waiting the arrival of the Hinenioa to convey them to the West Coast, where they will be attached to the A.Ci &s a'outs. The New Zealand Times was served to-day with a writ claiming LSOOO damages for alleged libel published on Saturday against W. Hutchison, Mayor of Wellington. A progress report ha* been received from Dr Hector at Sydney. He states that the apace allotted for New Zealand is dark in comparison with other parts of the buildiug, The number and size of the exhibits excted the estimate. He has applied for an additional 10,000 square feet. The exhibits have heen insured against fire to the excent of LSOOO, which will be increased when other articles arrive. He states that the official opening has been fixed for the 17th of September, but thinks that, owing to the unfinished state of the building, a month will elapse before the exhibits can be arranged. The right of entry through land required for the Wellington - Foxton railway has been secured, and Mr Blackett, engineer-in- charge, expect* to be able to act men to work by day labour on Monday. The place where work will be commenced is jast behind Wadestown, about two miles from town, At a meeting of the Education Board this afternoon, it was decided to do away wi^h subcommittees, and the work hitherto done by them will be transacted by the Board in Committee. Nearly all the landowners through whose land the West Coast railway will pass have promised to give the land required witheut compensation. i It is understood that the altercation between ! Mr Mstckay and Col. Reader will be amicably settled, and that Mr Mackay will rejume charge of the Maori prisoners to-morrow. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Mr G. G. Stead was elected president, and Mr A. Cracroft Wilson vice-presi-dent. A resolution was passed protesting against the removal of the railway headquarters to Dunedin. It was also resolved to communicate with the Government, and to use every effort to obtain further reports before allowing tho question of the West Coast railway to be shelved. Timaru, August 27th. The total value of exports from the port of Tiinarn for the year ended June 30lh last w;>s L 375,156. Of this thofe to foreign ports amounted to L 93,510, and the rest went coastwise.
