COAL-MINE ACCIDENTS.
A commission comprising in its personnel the names of several eminent scientific men, has just been formed in England, to investigate the following important questions relating to coal mining : The commissioners, we learn from the English Mechanic, are appointed " for tho purpose of inquiring and reporting whether, with respect to the influence of fluctuations of atmospheric pressure upon the issue of fire- damp from coal ; to the adoption efficient application of trustworthy indicators of the presence of fire-damp, and ganerally to systematic) observation of the air in mines ; to improved methods ia ventilation and illumination ; to the employment of explosive agents in the getting of minerals; and to other particulars relating to mines and mining operations; the resources of science furnish any practicable expedients that are not now in use, and are calculated to prevent the occurrence of acoidents, or limit itheir disastrous consequences." The report of this commission will undoubtedly embody a large mass of facts and suggestions which will be of the highest value and importance to every class of mine operators.
