DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL FOR NASEBY.
(from our [own correspondent.) v Naseby, August 23rd. A well-attended public meeting was held in the Town Hall last night, with reference to the District High School. The following reso lutions were carried, there being only two diseentientB :— Mored by Mr N. P. Hjorbino, seconded by Mr De Lautouk— -"That is is highly desirable in the interest of education in the interior of Ofcago, that steps should betaken for the establishment of a District High School in those districts that are unconnected by raih with the higher educational institutions established on the sea coast." Moved by Mr R. Glenn, seconded by Mr E. Nicholas — "That with a view of carrying out the spirit of the foregoing resolution, this meeting resolves that necessary steps be taken to secure the establishment of a District High School in ►Naaeby, and that the Education Board of Otago be memorialised to give tffect to the wishes cf this meeting ; also, that the Councils of the County of Maniototo and Borough of Naseby be requested to co-opsrate in the movement." The following committee were appointed to give effect to the roiolutionß : — The Mayor, Messrs R. Glenn, E. Nicholas, M. J. S. Mackenzie, H. And*rson, N. P. HiorrinE? W H, Ash, and H. Wilson. *" Mr De Lautouk spoke strongly in favour of the movement. He said it wag a pity that the name " District High School " was applied by the Act. It could have been better ca'led a Grammar School. He thought it imperabivo that children in' the country should have a chance of being developed as well as those in eitier. The Rev. M'Cosh Smith made a good speech, and proved by statistics published in the Education Report, 1879, that Naseby stood third in its claim for a District High School, when compared with other towns in whiah Rueh wei c not established in Ot»g", and was first when compared with interior towns. It had 33 more average attendance, for instance, than Cromwell, which place had been reforrtd te by the Jnjgpeetor
