(Rbutbr's Special.) (Bt Cable.) Melbourne, July 9 th. In the Legislative Assembly last nighfc, on the Speaker announcing the return of Mr Deakin for East Bourke, Mr Gaunson moved a protest. Mr Deakin has since re- \ signed owing to the strictures passed upon \ his conduct. The Government have intimated that they purpose introducing a bill to amend the 4ectoral law and numerous other important easures, unless the Reform Bill should 'absorb all other questions. Melbourne, July 9fch. A writ of £5000 damages has been issued against Mr Graham Berry, for slander, by the Daily Telegraph. Weiberg has been committed for trial. Sydney, July 9 th. The Legislative Council rejected Sir John Robertson's proposed clause in the L.ml BUI,- and in consequence the meature hm been dropped, In the course of the debate in tbe Assembly last night the Premier ttated that he intended tj submit a inct.oa in reference to the action of the Com cil on tho Land Bill. Arrived : Tha mail steamer City of New York, from Auckland. The Premier has tabled a series of resolu tlons against the Council's repeated rejection of the Assembly's carefully considered measures, recommending the introduction of a bill to make the Council responsible to the people. The Treasurer submitted a proposal for a further loan of £7,787,768, for railway, water supply, and sewerage, but not to be placed on the market for s)me time.
