Statistical.

The number of officiating ministers of religion, registered under the Marriage Act for the Colony, is 494. The Church of England claims 185; Presbyterian, 57; Roman Catholic, 110 : Wesleyan Methodist, 74; Congregational Independents, 13; Baptists 14; Primitive Methodist Connection, 16; United Methodist Free Church, 12; Lutheran Church, 8; Hebrew, 5; and Church of Christ, 1. The Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington during the week ending on Saturday amounted to L 9539 Is 6d, being the largest sum yet received in any one week, The returns show that 364,020 telegrams have been forwarded during the December quarter, being an increase of 61,216 on the same quarter of the previous year; cash received, L 17,793123 3d, being an increase of L 3159 8s 3d. Number of tonnage and crews of ships entered inwards for years 1878-1877:—Vessels: 1878,926; 1877, 812; Tons : 1878, 45,649 ; 1877, 388,568. Crews: 1878, 16,710 hands; 1877, 15,126. hands. Similar return of vessels cleared out- 1 wards during years 1878-1877 :—Vessels: 1878, I 886; 1877,848. Tons: 1878, 428,493; 1877, ! 400,609. Crews: 1878, 15,441 hands; 1877, 15,334 hands. The annual report of the Auckland Trustees' Savings Bank was published on the 7th. It shows that in Auckland the amount at the credit of 3721 depositors on the 31st December, 1877, was L 108.870 14s 6d, and at the end of last year this sum had swelled to L 131.825 Is Id. During last year the sum of L 105,282 16s 7d was deposited, and the re-payments during the same period were L 87,374 63 6d, leaving a net excess of deposits over withdrawals of L 22.954 63 7d. The interest credited to depositors during the year, L 5045 16s 6d. The reserve fund now amounts to Ll3 500. The total year's cash transactions were L 149.363 12s Bd. The Institution holds 105 mortgages, for L 102,778 ; besides L 6106 in debentures and has a working account with the Bank of Australasia of about L 57,000. The report of Jthe Penny Savings Bank is also satisfactory, there being 1999 open accounts, with a credit balance of L 2048 8s 6d.
