Waste Lands Board.

The ordinary weekly meeting of tbe Waste Lands Board, held on Wednesday, was attended by Messrs J P Maitland (Chairman), H Bastings, J W Thomson, J B Bradshaw, J Green, and H Clark. The following business was transacted :— MAERBWUBNUA. Mr Cemnell, on behalf of the N Z L and M A Co, applied to purchase northern portion of section 15, block IV, Maerewhenua, formerly held under lease by L Grant (deceased) The Chairman said the piece of ground a9ked for was the only place reserved tor public purposes in the neighbourhood, and recently the Police Department had applied to be allowed to U9e it as a paddock. He would recommend it not to be soid. Mr Connell suggested that the land, not being formally reserved, should be withdrawn from sile, as it was tantalhinarly close to properties which would be improved by iisacq'iirement. It was decided that this wou'd not be necessary, and the application was declined. TIMBER LICENSE. Mr Coaaell, for Messrs J and \V T M'Farlane, aprlied to occupy, under timber licer.ss, for one year, 20 acres of bush reserve, block XIV, Glenkunich, adjoining sections 49, 50, and 51. „ The Chairman said he believed there could be no objection to the grant, and it wa3 agreed to issue the license for one year at 7a per acre. G&BNOMARO. Mr Mitchell Abernethy applied to purchase 20 acres of section 13, block 11, Gleaomaru, temporarily reserved for bush. . It was stated that the land being in the valley, might be required for the purposes of the Catlin's Kiver railway, and it was agreed to have a report upon it before dealing with the application. DEFERRED-PAYMENT APPLICATIONS. The following applications to purchase under deferred payments exchange lease were granted:— G Rose, section 48, block V, Waitahuna East ; T Brunton, sections 47a and 181, block H, Tu*t-eka. CANCBLIiATION OF CERTIFICATES. The Chairman recommended the Board to cancel the interim certificates of the following parsons who had neglected to execute their deferred-payment licenses in terms of aectioa 52b of the Otago Waste lunds Act, 1872 :— G M'Leod, section 12, block III ; J Allan, section 16, block HI ; G A Summers, section 8, block III; A Kirkpatrick, Bection 29, block 111, allot Ofruna . and J Baird, section 17, bl ck X[l, Chatton. The usual notice having been served, it was agreed to cancel the certificates as recoinmendad. BbUKSKIN. Mr J Doughty, for Mr A Dodd*, of Blueskin, appVedfor a reheaiing in reference to his application for a license to occupy part of section 40, block 11, North Harbour and Blueskin. Rehearing refused, as Mr Doughty h»d made the application under a misaporehension. WAIKOUAITI. Ranger Valpy, with reference to an application by Mr J. Law to purchase an, island in the Waikouaiti River, recommended that the 'and be surveyed into two-acre lots and put up at auction. Mr Grkkn stated that the island had been used to supply material for railway embinkment ; and as it was stated the extent of the island was only four acres, it was decided not to take any steps with regard to it ia the meantime. DEPASTURING! LICENSE AT MARTIN'S BAY. Messrs Haggitt Bros aud Brent, for Messrs Colville and Torrle, applied for a license to depasture stock over 10,000 acres of land at the West Coast, near Martin's Bay, and bounded by the Eed Mountain, the Whitburn Creek, the Upper Tiki Creek, and the dividing range. It was explained that the bock was portion of 100,000 acres peviously taken up, but never tenanted, and therefore surrendered, and it; was agreed to put up the block asked at auction at the upset price of £50 per annum for ten years— approval of the Government to be obtained. CROOKSTON. Mr G M'lndoe applied to purchase, instead of lease, section 6, block IX, Crookston, under section 54 of the Act.— Agreed to. I,IQSITB APPLICATION AT WAIKAKA. Messrs J Robertson and W M'Phail applied for five acre* of lignite reserve section 3, block IX, Waikaka. —License granted for seven years at £1 per acre per annum ; maximum cbarge for coal at pit's mouth to be 12a per ton. WYNDHAM. Ranger Campbell, with regard to certain applications to purchase portions of bu*h reserve, block I, Wyndham, recommended that 100 acres (so acres being good timber, and worthy of being reserved) be surveyed into flve-acre sections, and offered forsale at the upset of £10 per acre. The Ranger's recommendation was adopted, and instructions were given to have the survey made. GOLD-MINING LEASES Tbe following certificates of applic rtion for goldmining leases were approved :— Patrick Murphy, section 6, Hock Vlf. Lauder ; W Gardioer and others, section 5, block VII, Mid-Wakatip. The following surrender of lease was accepted :— William Duncan, section 9, block V£l, Skippers. > AGRICULTURAL LEASH. The foil jwing ceruflcate of application for agricultural lease was approved :— Adam Stevenson, section 44, block I, Crookston. The following ipplications to purchase under agricultural lease were approved:— Jau Smith, sections 1 and 2of 39, and 95, Diock I, Waitahuna West ; Geo Murray, section 61, block IV, Tuapeka East ; Alex. Robertson, f ections 40 and 42, block IV, Tuapeka East; James White, sections 9 and 10, bock VI, Table Hill ; F 8 Margetts, sections 5 and 22, block IV, and 45, 46, and 47, block 1 1, Tuapeka West; Anthony Knowleß, section 30, book I, Crookston ; Mizjbeth Grant, section 24, block XXI, Shotover. The following certificate was cannelle ' : — John M'Lean, sections 16 and 17, block 11, Mid-Wakatip. The following surrender was actepted :— J W Baker, section 29. block VII, Shotover. The fol-owing applicition to exchange agricultural leaie for deferred-payment li ase was approved :— Joseph Maher and J P Hill, loctions 53 to 67, 66 to 68, block I, Wendon distrint. SURVEY PLANS. The Board approved ot plans of survey of block I, Crookston, sections 44 to 52 inclusive ; block XXI, Crookston, section 1 ; block VIII, Rankleburn, Bection 4 HAWKSBrjRY TOWNSHIP. The Board fixed the upset price of land to be offered at auction in Hawkabury township at £10 per acregale to be held in Land Office, Dunedin. DAY OF MEETING. Upon the request of Mr H Driver and others, to the effect that the Board's day of meeting be altered, coming up for considnration, the Chairaian said the members of the Board were of opinion the most convenient day for all parties was tbe present one, and it was agreed, therefore, to continue the meetings on Wednesdays. RUNS. ' The Waste Lands Board, at its maeting on Jan. 15 took into consideration the manner of dealing with a number of runs, the leases of which exp.re in March, 1880, in terms of section 114, Lands Act> 1877. The Chairman, in bringing the matter forward, laid a list of the runs, with descriptions of the country, 1 c , upon the table, and aaid there were only two oi ..- c runs— Nos 98 and 92— the former Mr Tescheker's, the latter Dr Webster's— regarding which, in : < opinion, there could bo any doubt as to the advisi>' ■> .ility of re-leasing The country wai hilly and rough, - \al a carrying capacity <.f only one sheep to every three acres and five acres Still in both cases the runs were adjacent to hundreds, the land in which had all been disposed of, and it was possible if put up lor sale the land might be sold to advantage. The list of runs, their tenants, and the decisions come to in each, were as follows :— Run No 98 —Kauroo district ; 8000 acres ; carry 2650 iheep ; rough and hilly— \T H Tenchemakar,

Run No 99— Kaurno district ; 1000 acres; carry 200 sheep ; roucjh and hilly— G M Webster. In regard to these two runs, it was determined that the whole lands within the run are required for sale as rural lands under part II of Land Act ; lessees to receive notice accordingly. Run No 418.— Greenstone Valley : 30,000 acrea ; carry 2000 sheep ; mostly very mountainous— R and R Campbell.— Determined to re-leaso at £00 per annum for 10 years Run No 421.-Ohau ; 29,000 acres ; carry 6500 sheep : rough and high— G Ludeman.— Determined to be re-leased in two portions for 10 years at £100 per annum each. Run No 424.— Waikaia Bush ; 17,800 acres ; carry 6000 sheep ; mountainous, 5000 to 4000 feet high, very rough— John M'Kellar.— Determined to be re-leased in two portions for 10 years at £120 per annum each. Run No 425a.— Waikaia Bush ; 12,000 acres ; carry 1910 sheep ; very rough, cold country— Cargill and Anderson.— lo.7oo acres of this run beiner under orders for Burvey, it was resolved to add the remaining 1300 acres to No 425b Run No 425b.— Walkaia Bush ; 16,600 acrea ; carry 2560 sheep ; very rouirh, cold country— Joseph Clarke. —To be re-leased for 10 years at £100 per annum, with exception of 1000 acres under survey Runs Nos 426 and 427 — Manip ri Lake and Waiau River ; 6000 acre* ; carry 2000 sheep ; narrow valley and bluff round hill, country rouirh— A M Clark.— To be re-leased in two portions at routal of £50 and £40, for 10 years. Run No 428 —Waikaia ; 10,000 acre*; carry 1600 shoep ; high, cold country— Joseph Clarke.— To be relsased as a whole for 10 - ears ; rental, £70 Run 429a..— Ohau ; 39,500 acres ; carry 7100 sheep ', high and mountainous -T C Hill.— To be re-leaspd in two portions— 24,ooo acres at rental of £120; 15,500 acres at £90. Run No 416.— Wakatipu; 74,000 acres ; 4000 sheep; very rough, high, and poor country — R and R Camp-bell.—Re-leased for 10 yews at £130. Run No 423A.— Mokomai; 6000 acres; 1600 sheep; high, rough country— D A Cameron.— Re-leased for 10 years at £50. Run No 423a.— Nokomai ; 10,000 acres ; 1486 sheep ; high, rough cjuntry— James Gill.— Re-leased for 10 years at £50 Run No 436.— Waikaia ; 63,000 acres ; 9000 Bheep; high, rough country— Joseph C arke.— To be re-leaseu in two portions for 10 years— 34,soo acrea at £180, and 28 500 acres at £160.
