X V Z, Cromwell— Knottingley won the Canterbury Cup and J C Handicap. Sport, Oaraaru— Cloth of Gold was three yeara old when he won the Forbuiy Handicap. J S, Blueskin— Briaeis and Chtater both won the double. The first acceptances for the Dunedin Cup of 500sovs and the Publicans' Handicap of lOOsovs close on Saturday, 11th inst. Cromwell annual races, postponed from the proper days until the 27th and 28th ult. on account of rain, were notwithstanding a great success. On the first day the Maiden Plate of 25sovs was won by Dr Leahy's Dandy, beating Cymbeline and two others. Mr W. Taylor's Haricot (Bst 111b) won the Grand Stand Handicap of 40sovs, behind him being Gamecock (9st 81b), Cymbeline (7st), and three more. The Architect Produce Stakes of 50sovs for two-year-olds fell to Mr T. Wood's Perline in a field of five. Mr W. Barry's Foam won the Selling Stakes of 20sovs, beating three others. On the second day Mr Taylor's Boughleen Dboun landed the Flying Handicap of 20sovs, Gamecock, Sir Vincent, and Cymbeline being worsted. Mr Loughnan's Spey secured the Shorts of lOsovs, and Haricot (Bst 121b) scored another win in the J. C. Handicap of 40sovs, beating Freestone (9st 81b) and Gamecock (9st 61b). Foam added the County Plate of 30sovs to her winnings, and Mr M'Kenna's Clyde won the Consolation Stakes of 15sovs. Altogether £250 was given in added money. The Arrow meeting was held on the 30th and 31st, the £150 of added money being divided among 12 events. The Maiden Plate was won by Mr Tuohy's Boy ; the Grand Stand Handicap by the same gentleman's Fairy Queen, beating Nabochlish and Schoolboy; the Miners' Race by Flying Beauty j the Ladies' Purse by Speculator; the Selling Race by The Buck; and the Hurry Scurry by Little Dick. On the second day the Hurdle Raco was won by Fairy Queen; the Arrow Handicap by Nabochlish, beating Speculation and Timbertop; the Farmer's Purse by Billy ; the District Race by Speculation ; the Consolation Stakes and Hospital Race by Schoolboy. At Waitahuna Mr Dwyer appears to have h*d things much his own way, for he won the Maiden Plate with North Cary; the Publicans' Purse with Fenian ; the Town Plate with Glengarry ; and Miners' Purse with Maniototo. Mr Sutherland won the Hospital Race with Congreve and the Consolation Stakes with Typo. Mataura seems to have been a good thing for Mr T. Ayson, who won the Wyndham Handicap and Mataura Handicap with his recent purchase Benjiroo, and the Hurdle Race with Stella. Benjiroo carried only Bst 121b in each handicap, and a great deal^ of unpleasantness was caused at the way in which he was thrown in. „,,,. „ There is still little to report in betting on the Dunedin Cup, the lull being caused partly by the absencejofthft bookmakers at Auckland, and partly by the fact that the first acceptances are just due. After then, a spurt maybe expected. The following are the latest quotations :— 8 to 1 agst Titania B_i Mata 0 — 1 Templeton 10 —1 — Fishhook 100 — 8 Camballo 100 — 8 Mufti 100 — 8 Fallacy 100 — 7 Natator 100 _ 6 Chancelor 100 — 6 Nemo 100 — 6 Insolvent 100 — C Sinking Fund 100 — 6 Janalor 100 — 0 Longlands 100 — 6 Danebury ]00 - 5 Cloth of Gold 100 — 5 York 100 — 5 Venus Transit 100 — 5 Foul Play 100 — 5 Vampire 100 — 4 Laertes 100 — 4 Obcon 100 — 4 BunjVoo 100 — S I/idy Ellon 100 — 3 Dead He.it 100 — 3 Ariol 100 — 3 Luna 100 — 3 Lady Elizabeth 100 - 2 to 1 the rest. Mr J. Giliigan, one of the Colony's most popular and rospectcd racing men, died on Sunday somewhat suddenly. His loss will bo much felt, for he was one of the few owners of horses in these Colonies whose horses may be relied on aa going straight. At Clinton, that usually disappointing mare Sapphira managed to win tho principal handicap by a neck from old Patch, behind whom was Lucy. Mr Moffafs Sir Lancelot wou the j

Maiden Plate ; Mr T. Pollock's Telemachus tho Selling Race; Patch the Ladies' Purse; Mr W. Pollock's Kate the Trotting Race; Mr Swan's Lucy the District Handicap; Mr W. Pollock's Native the Consolation Handicap ; and Mr T. Pollock's Camellia the Hurry Scurry. The manner in which Lady Ellen ran in tho two handicaps at Wainiate, when she suffered defeat at the hands of Blue Peter, seems to have attracted the attention of the stewards, for I observe that thoy discussed the matter next day, and as a result, wrote to the mare's owners expressing the opinion that all was not as it should have been. Maritanahas been adding to her laurels at Marton-Rangitikei, where she carried off the Railway Handicap of 100 soys., the MartonRangitikei Handicap of 250 soys., and tho Shorts Handicap of 25 soys. - all she was entered for. Mr Delamain appears to have got into disgrace at this meeting, if one can believe the local papers, turough demanding £40 to nothing about Maritana as a condition of her starting ; but I was not before aware that Mr Delamain had any interest in the mare, or is likely ever to have. By winning the Auckland Cup Ariel has incurred a 71b penalty for the Dunedin Cup, and by winning the Auckland R. C. Handicap Pinfire has incurred a 61b penalty for the Wellington Cup. At the Auckland meeting Mr H. Prince won £608 in stakes; Mr M'Donald £342; Mi P.Butler £158; and Mr A.Buckland £148. No particulars of the Greymouth meeting reached here by telegraph, but by files I find that the Trial Stakes of 15 soys. was won by Mr G. Nottle's Blazing Star, who also secured the Railway Handicap of 30 soys. The Hurdle Race of 20 soys. fell to Mr Tarry's Doctor j while Mr Cochrane's Banker won the Grey Valley Handicap of 30 soys., and tho Borough Handicap of 25 soys. The same gentleman's mare Blue Bell won the CousolatioD Stakes of 15 soys. As at our up-country meetings, so on the West Coast, the races had to be put off through rain and floods. The Hokitika fixture waa held on the 31st ult. and following day, with the course in a very heavy state. The Goldfielda Handicap of 30 soys. was won by Mr J. Clarke's Kensington (7st 71b), Phantom (Bst) second, Robin Hood (7st 81b) third, Colleen (6st 81b) last. The District Handicap of 20 soys. was won by Mr J. Cameron's Native (7st 71b), Kensington (7st 71b) second, Cplleen (7st 31b) third. In the Hokitika Handicap of 50 sots. Native (7st 61b), and Phantom (7st 131b) slipped and fell in the heavy ground, and gaye Mr Clarke's Elfin King (9st 61b) an easy victory. On the second day Mr S. Osborne's Johnny won the Hurdle Race of 20 soys. (w.f.a.), beating Kensington and Silverstream. Native won the Westland Handicap of 50 soys., with Elfin King and Phantom behind him. The Selling Handicap of 30 soys. fell to Mr Osborne's Johnny, and the Ladies' Purse of 20 soys. to Kensington, behind whom were Native and > Silverstream. In the Consolation Handicap of 15 eovs. Robin Hood beat Phantom and Colleen. " Sinbad." reports that the new grand stand of the Timaru Club is to cost £1400, and that the annual races will be held between the Dunedin and Canterbury autumn meetings. Mr A. M'Lean has lost his imported sire Arab Chief. Pinfire has been bought by Mr A. M'Donald for 500gs. The stakes for the Canterbury Champagne Stakes of 1880 will be increased to 250 soys. The Melbourne Champion Race waa won by Wellington, in 6min 34sec, or eight seconds longer than First King's time, half a second quicker than Pride of the Hill's, and a second quicker than Richmond's. The Champion Meeting was held on New Year's Day. For the Champion Stakes, three miles, nine horses contended. Bosworth showed a good deal of temper at the start, andjeaused. some delay. Vulcan went to the front directly they got away, Wellington and Warlock being close on him. Calamia waa very slow on his legs. After going nearly a mile, Wellington passed Vulcan and led past the stand, where Warlock and Vulcan were together, and Boon after the former cleared away from Vulcan. Wellington, Warlock, and Vulcan ran in that order round the far turn, and along by the abbattoirs Miaa Whiffler was beaten off, and Calamia was nearing the first division. In toe straight Warlock, under the whip, struggled up to Wellington ; but Murphy just moved on his horse, and he shot away half-a-dozen lengths with scarcely an effort. Wellington won very easily ; Warlock was second. Bosworth, who came well at the finish, was a good third. The others came in straggling a good deal. Time, 5 mm. 34f sec.
