Meetings.

The meeting of Dunedin footballers, convened to consider the proposal of a visit to the Colony by an Eng'ish football team, and held oa Monday night in the Shamrock Hotel, was well attended. Mr J. P. Maitland was in the chair. The following telegram from Auckland, dated 3rd instant, was laid before the meeting for consideration :— " The Secretary of the Football Union, Sydney, writes concerning the visit of an English team next season, and asks whether it is probable the amount necessary can be raised. At a meeting here it was considered Auckland was good for L 250. Let me know before Tuesday what Ocago can do." An interesting discussion took place relative to the proposal. It was stated that upon the visit of the Canterbury football team to Otago last year, the idea of a combined team visiting Australia had been mooted, and Mr Rose and other members of the Carisbrook Cricket Club mentioned that during their New Year's trip to Timaru the matter had been further talked over with Mr Haminereley and others, and a determination come to to carry out the visit if possible. The general f esling expressed was that money for the purpose of defraying the expenses of such a team could be raised easier than for the visit of an English team and besides it was considered that if such a team were sent to Australia it would in^ all likelihood meet the Englishmen there, besides playing with the leading Australian clubs. It was finally carried, upon the motion of Mr J. C. Thomson, seconded by Mr H. Rose, "That pending the proposed visit to Australia by a combined Canterbury and Otago team, this meeting is not in a good position to guarantee any sum towards the expenses of an English team ; but at the same time is prepared "to make arrangements to offer them the whole of the gate-money." The Secretary of the D. F. C. was instructed to wire to Auckland and Canterbury the foregoing resolution. Opinions were expressed strongly in favour of bringing to an issue the proposed visit of a Canterbury and Otago team to Australia.'and a committee, consisting, of Messrs Barber, Dixon, and Rose, was appointed to communicate with Canterbury footballers respecting the matter. A number of J. Tyson's friends met in the Empire Hotel on Monday night, and decided to present him with a gold watch, in recognition of j his having won the champion wrestling contest. At a meeting of the High Schools Board on Monday, Miss Douglas, who has recently arrived from Great Britain, was appointed to the position of second assistant of the Girls' High School. Miss Douglas was for sometime head mistress of the Jubilee Girls' School, JNew-castle-upon-Tyne. A special meeting of the Dunedin School Committee wan held on Monday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs Ramsay (in the chair), Fish, Nathan, Robin, and Profeasor M'Gregor. It was decided to recommend Mr W. H. Arnold, who is at present the first as<istant in the Forbury School, to the position of second master of the North Danedin School, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr William Murray, who resigned in order to fulfil an appointment at Napier.
