THE TORRES STRAITS MAIL.
Cooktowk, December 23rd. The Menmuir, via Torres Strait, arrived at Cooktown yesterday. She left Hong Kongand Singapore two days in advance of contract time. The health officer refused pratique, and no list . of passengers is obtainable. Mr Goldie is on ' board. The tin-mining interests in_ Cornwall are depressed in consequence of emigration extending. Michael Ahem, the only Fenian prisoner in England, has been released. The French Republic is daily becoming more consolidated. Italy is taking active measures to suppress brigandage. The new Electoral Eeforrn Bill introduced, basing the franchise on education, will increase the number of voters by a million and a half. German papers criticise England's conduct in pushing on war so early iv Afghanistan. Obituary.— Captain Stock, Viscountess Cholmondeley, Sir T. S. Dwver, Lady Williams, Dr Longfield, Major English, and Samuel Phillips. Singapoee, December 6 th. The Straits Times slates that important coal mines have been found in Cebu, Philippine Islands, and splendid samples obtained from large deposits. An earthquake occurred at Hong Kong, but no damage was done. It was also felt at Canton. Sir W, Eobinson has returned from Bangkok. He was received with great splendour by the King of Siam. Trade is dull ; sugar and coffee sales low.
