Mr Skbnk reports : —
We are now getting into what is always understood to be the dullest season of the year. Hii.herto work has'at this period beon slack, now it is quitt the reverie and working men have a very fnir prospect for the winter. Oi course, builders and out-door labourers must ca'culato on a good deal of broken fme ; but these breaks are trifling compared to what workingmen have to put up with in the Old Country. Ploughmen and farm couples are in excellent demand. Ab for girls, thoy seem all to get nwrried. Hotels are quiet. Now is the weather to try tho unsuitable classos. Wages-Girls, 10b, 12», 16s, 20s, and 30s • couplei, 70s, 755, and 003 ; boys, 6% and 10s ; ploughmen, £55, £60, and £^6 ; d»y labour, 7s and 8s ; cools, witters, grooms, and gardeners, 25b to 40a ; barmaids and housekeepers, £10 to £78.
