BAIL WAY RETURNS.

The traffic returns of the New Zealand rail* " ways for the four weeks 'ended April 6th lost* j and for the corresponding period of 1877axO' published in the Gazette as follows : — • ' . ■:>

A return has been published showing the' total revenue and expenditure of the, several^ railways in the Colony during the financial' year 1877-78, to the termination of the four- " weekly period ending April 6th. From itwe'j gather that, exclusive of wharves, the gross', receipts amounted to L 403.583 2s Id, atad- total'* expenditure to L 299,237 8s 9d. The total length , of line open for traffic was 1001 miles, and the ' percentage of expenditure to revenue was 7414. On the different lines it was as follows :— -Kai- ' para, 132-25 ; Auckland, 78 82 ; Napier, 71*47 ;'- Wellington, 72*88; Foxton, 99*26 ; Wanganui, 137 -62 j New Plymouth, 105 92 j Greymouth,"' 78*84 ; Westport, 11217 ; Nelsor, 97 73; Pic- •' ton, 116*02; Ohristchurch, 70*77; Dunedin,' 71-74 ; Invercargill, 72*23.
