GENERAL REMARKS
Very satisfactory progress is being made its the construction of the lines of railway ire Otago. On the northern lino the section from; Moeraki to Palmerston ia almost finished, find iB to bo opened on Tuesday next. This will ' leave a gap of only eight miles for coach traffic, and it is expected that before the end of June the through line froia Dunediu to Christchuroh will be completed. Ie is proposed to open the Tairo section of , the southern line — from BalcluLha to Port Moly- , neux road — in June ; the \rork on this section being in an advanced state. By the opening of this portion of the line the settlers in the Waitapeka district will be afforded direct communication by rail with Dunedin. The surrey of line from Waipahi to Tapanui is concluded, and tenders for the construction of this branch of railway will, we understand, . shortly be invited. A survey for the ! extension of the Walton Park line of railway to the Brighton Road-is . . now being made, and tenders for carrying out this work will be called for without delay.' The survey of the Strafchtaieri railway is, we • undertand, being prosecuted with reasonable expedition.
