THE EXCELSIOR GATE.
Mr Thomas -Bath exhibited, at the Ballarat Agricultural Society's Show a field-gate so constructed that it can, be opened by a person on horseback, or the driver of a buggy or carriage. The model was brought from the Philadelphia Exhibition by Dr Hudson. It is called the Excelsior Gate~ and is patented by Mr J. E.. Strong, of Newton Brook, Ontario, Canada. The specimen shown i 3 made very light, merely to show the working. Mr Bath had his buggy on the ground, paid drove through several times, opening snd shutting the gate each time with the greatest ease. The gate is not hung 09 Binges, but is placed between two upright posts, and works on a couple of arms placed diagonally on the gate, with a loose joint at the foot. A couple of levers project from the uprights, from the end of iwhich hangs a piece of wood which is within easy reach of a person seated in a ibuggy. A slight pull brings down the lever, raising and drawing back the gate .till, it is brought over the perpendicular of ihe ride-stays, and the gate by its own ■weight coming down leaves the opening free. After driving through, the handle of the other lever is brought down, and $he gate is brought back to its original .position. The gate was greatly admired by those who saw it worked, and is likely .to, be much used..
