THE VOLUNTEERS.
THE INVERCARQILIi BAND. The members of this excellent band played some selections of music last Saturday afternoon at the Octagon. A crowd was g&therect, and the well-executed performance was thoroughly appreciated. The manner in which " The Death of Nelson " was played deserves special mention. In this popular piece of music the clear notes of the cornet were heard to great advantage. CHURCH PARADE. The Volunteers mustered at 2 o'clock at the Customhouse Squire on Sunday afternoon for the purpose of holding divine service. Tho following was the order observed • — First, the Invercargill Artillery, then .the InvercargiU Rifles, Dunedin Artillery, No. 1 Company City Gnardu, North Dunedin .Rifles, Mo. 2 Company Clutha Riflo3, Dunedin Naval Brigade, City Guards Cadels, with the Dunodin Naval Cadets bringing up the rear. On falling in, the command " wheel into line " was given, and after "fours" and "right,' the whole marched in the direction of All Saints' Church, where the service was to be held About & thousand people were assembled along the route taken, and at the church accommodation coiled be found for a very few besides the Volunteers, who numbered 340 strong. The Rev. Mr Byn<j preached from the text "Put on the whole armour of God," remarking that they should be humble soldiers of Christ, as well as defender-j of their country. The number in each company was as follows : — Invcrcirgill Artillery— Captain Hannah, 2 lieutenants, 1 colour-sergeant, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals, 2 buglersl and 40 rank and file; total, 54. Invercargil, Kifles— Captain Macrorie, 2 lieutenants, 1 colour-ser geant, 2 sergeants, 4 corporals, and 23 rank and file ; total, 35. InvercarjriU Band— One bandmaster, 1 baud sergeant, 2 corporate, and 16 bandsmeu ; total 20. Dunedin Artillery t- Captain Jack, Sub-
lieutenant Lambert, 3 sergeants, 4 corporals, and 22 rank end file; total, 32. City Guttda— Captain Wilson, 2 lieutenants, 1 colour-sergeant, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals, 1 busier, and 36 rank and file ; total. 49. North Dunedin Rifles— Captain Beeves, 1 lieutenant, 1 colour-sergeant, 2 sergeants. 2 corporals, and 32 rank and fie; total, 39. No. 2 Clutha— Lieat. Henderson, 1 corporal, 7 privates ; total, 9. Dunedin Navals— Captain Smith. Lieut. Jacobs, 2 petty officers, and 24 gunners; total, 31. City Guards Cadets— Captam Wilson, 2 Heuteuants, 2 sergeants, and 15 privates ; total, 20. The Invercargill Band played sacred music to and from the place of worship. Major Stavely thanked the Invercargill Volunteers for their attendance at the revi«w and parade, and comp'imented them on their efficiency in drill. A. large crowd of citizens turned out to listen " to' the music of the banu."
