ST. KILDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

The opening sciree in connection with the branch Presbyterian Church at St. Kilda was held on the. sth. The soiree was a thorough success. About 120 persons sat down to tea, and at the meeting afterwards the number was appreciably increased. The building was crowded to excess.

The Rev. L. Mackie occupied the chair, and said that he appeared somewhat in the capacity of minister of the new church. In the work of church extension, which had been recommended by the Presbytery, and undertaken by the several Kirk sessions, the oversight of the district of St. Kilda had fallen to the Kirk session of the First Church. For some time past Mr Michelsenhad laboured as a missionary in the district, and cottage meeting? had been held. Mr Michelaen was now about to leave as a missionary to the Islands, and his place was to be taken by Mr Beid. The position of the Church would be at first one of dependence upon the First Church ; but it was hoped that soon the congregation would be able to make the Church independent of outside aid. The Rev. Mr Mackie concluded by directing his_ hearers to consider the true purposes for which Church organisations exist, and remarked that even regular attendance at a place of worship was a testimony to the world in favour of religion, and was in a certain sense a means of preaching the Gospel. Mr Wood, the missionary for the district, delivered a short evangelical address. The Eev. Mr Gow spoke upon the same subject as the Chairman, and exhorted all to continue to witness for the truth by taking a genuine and permanent interest in the establishment of Churches in their midst. The. Rev. Mr Russell and Messrs Michelaen and Scorchie also addressed the meeting. A number of the members of the choir of First Church were present, and sang several of Sankey and Moody's hymns. On the motion of Mr George Reid, votes of thanks were passed by acclamation to the Choir, the Ladies, and the Speakers, and the meeting was closed at 10.30 p.m. with th enediction.-
