WAKA MAORI LIBEL CASE.

Wellington, August 27th. The Waka Maori libel case commenced to-day in the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice. The counsel for plaimVff are Messrs Macassey, Stout, Bell, and Fitzgerald ; for the defence — Messrs Connolly, Chapman, andDr Bullsr. Mr Macassey opened the case in a speech of two hours. Only three witnesses were examined, The chief points of note in the evidence were (1), That Mr Clark, Under Secretary of the Native Department, deposed that when a libellous letter was given h'*m to translate he declined to do so, and recommended that it should not be inserted, as it contained statements resrarding a gentleman in another part of the Colony which he' cousidered improper to pub'ish. 2nd, That subsequently the Natives complained of the letter not being' published, and that about a.month after a telegram was sent by the Native Minister giving instructions to publish the letter in the Waka Maoi i. 3rd, Two Natives were called to prove their names had i been attaohed without their authority. The ca^a is expected to occupy eight or ten days. Two Jurymen who absented themselves were fined £10 each. The Court was crowded all day.'
