AN OLD, SUBSCRIBER, Warcpa, asks the following question: —" The dog tax ia due on Ist April each year, and a dog is not taxable until a certain age. Suppose that a. dog is not of taxable age on the Ist of April when the tax on other dogs is due, is it competent for the collector to come back and demand the tax that same year whenever the dog does come of age P For instance, to put a strong
but quite probable CEse : — Suppose a dog is of taxable age in the beginning of March, 1877, can the tax be demanded for the year ending 31st of March, 18/7, and then be again demanded on Ist April, 1877, for the year beginning on that date ? The collector says " Yea," in which I can't see any use in making an exemption as to age at all. JOHN G. SMITH, Longbush, sends the following elegant triplet by Sir Thomas Wyatt, and dated as far back as the reign of Henry VIII. :- A lady gave me a gift she had not, And I received her gift, which I took not, And if she take it again, I will grieve not.
