LAND FOR SETTLEMENT..

MEETING AT PALMERSTON.

Our Paltnerston correspondent telegraph-* : — The important question of setting aside land for settlement near Palmerston was discussed at the Town Hall on Friday evening. The Mayor, Mr C. Haynes, presided, and amongst the speakers were Messrs M. Fagau, J. Arkle, M. Todd, and Ellison. A large number of farmers residing in the district were present. The land which is sought for settlement is run SO, "Ounback district, and the present lessee is Sir F. D. Bell. The land is situated only a few miles from Palraerston, and several of the speakers who recently inspected portions of it, state that competent judges have pronounced it highly suitable. After discussion, a Committee was appointed who are to lay the matter before the Waste Lands Board, representing the manner in which the land should be set aside. A petition has been framed, and already numerously signed, and will shortly be presented to the Boaid. It is stated that Sir Francis has signified his willingness that the land should be set apart for settlement. The members of the Committee are the M«ayor and Messrs J. Arkle, M. Todd, M, Fagsn, W. Craig, W. Dreaver, W. Little, Donald M'Donald, Bernard O'Neill, John M'Kenzie, Jas. Cochrane, J. Kobinson, W. A, Young, and J. E. GJover.
