The Children's Corner.
VERSES. [Whitten toe the Children's Corner.]
Sons of the thistle, shamrock, and rose, Inured and born to toil, Have found a Britain in the Soutuj Another sea-girt isle. Around New Zealand's stormy coast Wild wavea, like thunder roar ; Yet to the nations of the world She opens wide her door. Fair cities rise beside the sea — Far inland o'er her mountains steep ; Vast treasures in her bosom lie, That future ages yet shall reap. And here the hardy sons of toil A nation's mineral wealth unfold, And from her veins beneath their feet .Have opened up a mine of gold. ' ' Brave diggers, in their search for gold, Shall trace her- rivers to their source j And hill and vale' shall answer back The whistle of the iron horse. The stateliest, fairest, forest trees Shall fall beneath the woodman's axe j And fields be ripe with yellow corn, Where long had waved the fern and flax. Thus, as I stood on Flagstaff Hill, And thought what changes time might bring — Would Queen Victoria spare a son ? New Zealand's worthy of a king ! Dunedin, 33rd April, lQff. Y{, A,
