General Ccrtena has been arrested, and his propertyconfiscated. The House Committee on Appropriations insisted on a Civil Appropriations Bill of 360,000d0L to pay the claim of the Southern mail contractors for services rendered. It was regarded probable that the proposed subddy to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company of 400,000d015. will not be agreed to. The Postmaster will probably give only postages as compensation for services between San Francisco, J&pan, and China. Eight bodies of the crew of the oyster schooner Laura, which was capsized near A.napolis in the gale of December 20th, were recovered at Baltimore.
The Chinese confined in San Quentin gaol attempted to kill the warders by mixing pounded glass with their food. The plot was discovered.
Gas in a Sacramento sewer, which had escaped from the gas main, exploded. The streets were strewn with lumber and dirt, and a wide and deep ditch, over half a mile long, was visible, bearing the appearance of a chasm created by some terrible convulsion of nature. The Samoan Government has entered into a treaty of friendship with the United States. The Hawaiian Gazette, of February 14tb t says it will be noticed that the advertisement of the mail steamer is withdrawn, which is done by order of the Pacific Mail Company. On enquiry^we learn that Company has determined to withdraw from the route. In their latest letter they say :~Should the decision of the Hawaiian Government be unfavourable to our view of what is just and liberal in this contract, _we will immediately and for ever drop Port Jionolulu, and carry out our EnglishColonial mail contract by running direct from San Francisco and Fiji.
